Meet Rachel Vawter of Thicc Dough Cookie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Vawter.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never knew what I wanted to do. I went to three different colleges and ended up graduating with a degree in drawing. I worked at bars and restaurants. Eventually, I went to cosmetology school and worked in a salon for about five years. When I went on maternity leave, I knew I never wanted to go back to doing hair. But I didn’t know what to do after that.

Then the pandemic hit. I started baking for fun. I made all sorts of cakes and things. I’ve always enjoyed baking, but never considered it a possible career. I became obsessed with making big ridiculous cookies loaded with wacky stuff. My husband and I shared them with our friends, and they were a hit! I decided maybe I could sell them for some extra cash. One thing led to another, and here we are! I’m blown away and beyond grateful at the growth Thicc Dough has had in such a short amount of time. I’m so excited to see where the future will take this!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! Haha. I am a one woman business, so I do literally everything myself. From coming up with flavors/recipes, baking, taking orders, packing orders, social media, photos, inventory, financial stuff, cleaning what feels like one million bowls and pans, and making deliveries. I have a two year old son, so having time to do all of this and take care of him is a huge challenge. Thankfully, I have family to help me, but having enough time in the day is always the struggle. That, and social media!! Jeez, there is so much more to all that than you’d think.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Thicc Dough Cookie is pretty much what the name says: thick cookies. They’re beefy! Each cookie weighs 6-7oz. They all have unique names and fun stuff inside them. I like to mix things like Poptarts, Oreos, candy, and sometimes potato chips in the dough! And each cookie is stuffed with something in the middle: cream cheese frosting, nutella, oreos, peanut butter and jelly, etc. Many of the cookies are inspired by childhood memories. Most of the names have pop culture references. I like to make videos using those tiny hands you put on your finger tips, haha. Here at Thicc Dough, we like to keep things light and joyful. I mean, what is serious about a cookie??? What I am most proud of, beyond everything else, is the flavor. They aren’t sickly sweet- you’ll never find buttercream in the middle of my cookies. They are a perfect balance of sweet and salty. I’ve eaten A LOT of cookies in my life, and I can confidently say that these cookies slap! *chef’s kiss*

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t think luck has had anything to do with the growth of Thicc Dough. I always figured I would end up working some bleh job forever. It’s a sad thought, but I see lots of people doing that. But now, in my 30’s, I’ve found something I love to do, and have been able to turn it into a business. Isn’t that the dream?! So, in that sense, I feel extremely lucky!
