Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby-Gail Spence.
Hi Abby-Gail, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for doing hair and eyelash extensions stemmed from when I was younger, and my mother couldn’t necessarily afford to get my hair done or my nails done. I kind of tried to figure it out on my own to avoid bullying lol kids are mean! I used to take curly synthetic wigs and try to make it look like my own. I was always creative. I sort of always underestimated my talents and what I could do. In 2018, I decided to start doing lash extensions to earn a little more cash. I was self-taught and still learning by the time I started. I had my fair share of unsatisfied customers, which discouraged me a lot. So much that I stopped and started working as a cashier/customer service associate that same year. I worked as a cashier for about three years.
It wasn’t until September 2020 that I decided to give it another go but with hair and lashes this time. Things were pretty slow for me starting off and truthfully, I don’t even think I took myself seriously. I was trapped in the middle of my living room lol. I started building a little clientele soon after. I started reaching out to women with large followings on social media, and that’s how I got my name out there. By networking with people that had already have an influence. By March 2021, I took a leap of faith and quit Publix after 2-3 years. And I kid you not. My monthly income took off. I was making more monthly than I had ever seen working a 9-5. Quickly my life was changing; my dreams were coming true
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I struggle with being consistent, and I also struggle with anxiety. I would break down piece by piece how I could have done better, and every time it would be a battle in my head that wouldn’t go away. It was almost like a voice in my head telling me that I’m not good at what I do. When I left my 9-5 to pursue my dreams full time. I honestly was scared, crying every night. Just because you have dreams doesn’t mean the bills stop.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist/lash technician. That alone sets me apart simply because you can walk into my studio and leave with a brand new hairstyle and a full set of minks. It’s kind of like a “one-stop shop”. I am proud mostly of myself. For continuing to push even when I thought I couldn’t do it even while struggling with other things. I realized how strong I was.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory was going back to Jamaica to visit my grandpa. It was the best time for me, all my problems disappeared and he made me so happy. He taught me more than I could understand as a child. And it’s just now as a 21-year old that I understand everything he meant, I’m so grateful to have had him.
