Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Edwards.
Hi Teresa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Atlanta but raised in Florida. I’m an only child and grew up mostly in a single-parent household. My mom worked nights, so I spent a lot of time alone. We lived in a two-bedroom shack infested with rats and snakes until we moved to Miami by the 8th grade. We were extremely poor.
Being an African-American woman born and raised in the deep south brought on many unique challenges. One major challenge was the lack of exposure to opportunities. I was taught to graduate high school and either get a job or go into the military. Graduating from college, being an entrepreneur and an author was never a thought for my future.
Fast forward to the present day; I’m an author, executive producer, music consultant, radio host, and all-around creative guru. I earned an MBA from Kennesaw State University’s Executive MBA program. I’m a retired Air Force veteran with over 21 years’ combined service, where I served globally in many positions and countries. I also co-founded and own Terror Dome Entertainment, LLC, a video and music production company. And also founded Silence the Tears, a non-profit organization that provides financial support for counseling for abused children.
As an author, I’ve written three books. The Adventures of Hildie and Carlos series children’s books. It’s based on the loving relationship between my granddaughter and grand-cat. And Articles of Life: A Collection of Short Memoir Essays of Managing Life. This is a collection of tragic and inspirational events in my life. Despite all the adversities, tragedies, and losses, I’m proud to have raised a very gifted and talented daughter that will soon receive her Doctorate degree from the University of Chicago.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely had many obstacles and challenges! By the age of 25, I was a survivor of sexual, mental, and physical abuse. I was a single-parent, divorced twice, and motherless. At one point, I was seriously depressed and suicidal. It took many years of self-motivation to get to a healthy state of mind.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I co-own Terror Dome Entertainment, LLC with my husband. We specialize in music and video production. Plus, co-host The Real, Raw, and Rugged show on Terror Dome Entertainment Radio and YouTube and Own Your Truth. I work full-time for a media company. I write books, movie scripts, and plays. I also direct and produce movies and plays. I’m an active board member of several non-profit organizations.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia. I moved back after being honorably discharged from the military. What I love about Atlanta is the people. Most people that grew up in the South embrace the neighboring attitude. For example, people will wave and acknowledge you as you pass by, even if they don’t know you.
What I dislike about Atlanta is the increase in crime after COVID; everything is so spread out, and the TRAFFIC!
