Today we’d like to introduce you to Joi Mebane.
Hi Joi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Atlanta. I started my professional career off working at a beauty counter doing makeup. I transitioned into a salon where I specialized in only doing brows and lashes. From there, I went to college and brows and lashes were my side hustle. I did EVERYONE’s brows in my dorm room. Before finishing college, I got an opportunity to open my own cosmetics counter and I just went for it. Since then, I have been in business for over 18 years. I created my namesake line, THE LOOK BY JOI, in 2003. My goal has always been to transform and inspire women with exceptional eyebrow products in services.
In 2016, I trained with Amiea Permanent Makeup Systems in Hong Kong and Chicago to become certified in micro-pigmentation and microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup solution for brows and has allowed me to help even more women, some who suffered from hair loss on their eyebrows due to illness. I have trained over 2,000 students in everything brows. My goal is to set as many people up for success in the beauty industry as I can by teaching them how to provide these services in their own business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Business and entrepreneurship is never a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I face, along with any other entrepreneurs, is actually pivoting. Every two to three years, business and the consumer demands changes. So, as an entrepreneur, you have to be able to pivot to withstand things like a recession or a pandemic.

The Look By Joi specializes in all things eyebrows. We have a niche service and product line that goes hand and hand with each other. We provide brow grooming services and permanent makeup solutions for eyebrows.
Our mission is not only providing the services and products but educating our clients and students with coaching, digital products and in-person trainings to empower them with skills to achieve their goals whether it be in their beauty routine or business life.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Not only is Atlanta my hometown, it’s the beauty capitol of the world! From hair, makeup, nails, brows, the list goes on! The city has great energy being surrounded by so many entrepreneurs and beauty-preneurs.
As a female entrepreneur in Atlanta, I was definitely accepted in the beauty industry. However, being accepted in the business world outside of beauty was a little challenging. Most of the other business people around me started their careers later in life and were older than me. When I started my business, I was in my early twenties, so it was hard to be accepted because everyone assumed I was too young to really know what I was doing. This inspired me too even harder.
