Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Mickens Jr.
Hi Jimmy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am Jimmy Mickens Jr., known to the masses as DJ SMACK or THE DJ SMACK SHOW. I am a Dj from Decatur, GA that is on the rise. I started my Dj career while I was living in a small town called Lake Providence, Louisiana. I was living with my sister at the time she was a school teacher in the town. I moved there a short time after I graduated college. My sister would always tell me if you move out here with me it may be some radio opportunities for you. I was on the hunt looking for radio stations to work for but will hit a dead end every time as I sat back and thought about different ways to get on the radio. I said to myself, I love music, so I’m going to pick up Djing. I use to sit outside a little coffee shop and download as much music as I can. My very first gig was at a club called Club Entrigue. After being the house Dj there for about a year, I found out that my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She wanted me to move back home to Decatur but passed before I could do so. She passed Thanksgiving night of 2015. I felt like a lost soul, and I started doing negative things that I wouldn’t normally do.
In January of 2016, I packed up and moved back to Decatur. How I got on as a Dj in Decatur was I was working at a furniture store and I called a customer that I was told was a Dj Goes by Blu Mandella. The details of the story is so funny, but it’s a long story. When I finally met Blu, he said, bruh, you are one of the hardest DJs I’ve heard in a long time he said, stick with me; you will never have to work a regular job ever again. Since then, by the grace of God, I have been blessed to turn my talent into my career. I currently Dj at several clubs in Atlanta. I am Mixer on Streetz 94.5 Fm Station. I have a beautiful wife with beautiful children. I currently have my clothing line hitting the world right now. LYFE Customs and Apparels coming to all the Pop Up Shops Near You. I am just working hard and enjoying the fruits of life.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. The hardest part about being a Dj is selling yourself to the people. You have to make people trust your skill. If you’re this new Dj coming in and the people have been using to the same Dj for a few years, what are you going to do differently to get the people’s attention. Most of the struggles that come with Doing are internal. Sometimes you can feel like you’re not a good Dj and it can be depressing, and other times you can feel like you have overdid it as a Dj. You just have to find the right balance and stick to your script.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional Disc Jockey (DJ). I am what you called an unorthodox Dj. This is a great way to Dj, especially if you’re a Dj that Host while Djing. The best example of an unorthodox Dj is Funk Master Flex Or Kid Capri. I can be put in that category. I am a full show. I give the people what they pay to see. I am most proud of my consistency. Not taking no for an answer and being able to use my God-given talent to take away for my family and me. The thing that sets me apart is I don’t need no sidekick like other DJs do. I am the Dj that when the bases are loaded and it two outs and your team is down by three runs and I’m down in the count 0-2 that third pitch it’s going out the park. One man, One Stage, One Show. My 20% is better than your best Dj 100%.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I work well with everyone. I am very humble. Whoever wants to work, lets work. Don’t ever listen to what other people have to say about a person until you actually worked with that person in 3D.
