Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Stewart.
Brandon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My intersecting identities are; human, black, fat, African-American, Non-Binary (He/They), pansexual, multidimensional artist, storyteller, African Traditional Religion Practitioner, lover, dork. I am a storyteller. Portrait photography and my connection with my muses adds color to my being.
While attending the High School for Performing Arts, my Imposter Syndrome was born. After graduating, I refused to honor my creativity, at most only consuming other people’s art. In 2016, I began teaching iPhone photography which reunited me with my creative self.
One was the biggest opportunities from Covid-19 was not being able to work with other people. I then became my own muse, which sparked another level of introspection and added a new layer to my storytelling.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. First, I had to actively combat my Imposter Syndrome. Then, just the thought of buying a camera made my bank account hemorrhage. Once I’d saved enough to buy a camera, COVID-19 put a stop to me using other people as my subjects.
These “setbacks” really were challenges that prepared me for where I am today. It has ignited a deep passion to learn. A will to share stories in spite and because of what is going on in the world or my mind.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer who is currently focusing on Self Portraits. I share my perspective through the lens of my intersections.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Our stories matter… I love culture and admire other storytelling, no matter the art form.
I truly believe that our stories have the power to teach, unite, heal, illuminate, and motivate. In my work, I will always feature the voices and images of people who have multiple intersecting identities.
