Today we’d like to introduce you to Dede Wells, MBA.
Hi Dede, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I traveled a few paths before landing on my career. I started out in the Air Force, where I learned the art of discipline on a very basic scale. While serving, I took night classes at a college on base towards my Accounting Degree. After completing both my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I separated from the military and began my journey in Corporate America as an Accountant. After a few years, I discovered my passion was helping small business owners. That is when I decided to start my own Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation business in an effort to assist small business owners without the high fees.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If by smooth, you mean did not know how I was going to make it some months, then yes! Haha… This has been a journey for me. Some of the challenges I have faced is not knowing how to educate the masses. Many small business owners don’t know or understand what an Accountant or Bookkeeper is so they cannot process why they would need one. My biggest challenge has been trying to find creative ways to inform them.
We’ve been impressed with SmallBooks, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SmallBooks is a virtual bookkeeping firm that was created to help small businesses succeed. We focus on the financial health of a business by cleaning up the books and showing the owner how and if they are profitable. We also help them to set financial goals for the business and hold them accountable for reaching them while staying within the budget. This is an everyday thing and it is essential in the overall success of an organization. Aside from the monthly bookkeeping, we also provide tax preparation services at an affordable rate.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Integrity is probably the most important characteristic to have, working in my industry. I take pride in putting Integrity First… a core value that was instilled in me while serving in the Air Force.
