Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry H Washington, III.
Hi Henry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am the forth generation recipient of Prostate Cancer on my father’s side and the lone SURVIVOR! The Henry H Washington 3 Foundation (HW3) is a broad-based community organization with a mission of improving the lives of men and youth in metro Atlanta. Not only do I want to empower the lives of men and youth, but The Henry H. Washington 3 Foundation also gives my life clarity. I stand true to my purpose and shape my life accordingly. People who don’t know their purpose in life are not clear about what they want, and therefore waste their time on mediocre things.
I was raised by a village in Thomasville, Georgia; meaning, every adult that knew my parents and grandparents played a part of who I became to be to this day. I grew up going to church and Sunday School every Sunday. Which gave me the baseline of where my strength comes from to follow my purpose. I want men to understand that life is not just about us, it is about our families and leaving a legacy. We as men have to stay healthy and focused on what is important. My goal is to change the mindset of our children, help them understand that we know growing up and getting to know yourself is tough but there are rules to follow to stay out of jail, to not getting hurt or getting killed.
I graduated from Thomasville High School in 1987 and enlisted in the military in 1988 at the rank of Private E2 as a Chemical Specialist and later worked my way up to Sergeant. After completing my application for the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), I was selected to join the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Georgia Southern University/Savannah State University and later graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. I served as a Military Police Officer/Criminal Investigations Commander and a Military Police Special Operations Acquisition Officer. In 2000, I received my Master’s in Business and Security Management from Webster University. I retired in 2013 as a Major in the United States Army. I am currently in my last year of pursuing a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice Leadership from Liberty University.
I encourage every man to near the age of 40 years to GET CHECKED EARLY!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road for me in life. While serving 25 years in the Army and almost being killed in combat three times in three different combat deployments, I learned that life is precious! However, it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer that I really understood my gift to society.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a mentor, motivational speaker and author, I focus on empowering, educating and motivating others. I am overly proud of the number of youth that we have sent to college, the military and have helped establish their own businesses. The HW3 Foundation/ Divine Leadership Mentoring Program stands alone in ensuring that our kids understand Leadership and the Seven Core Leadership Values as a part of our HW3 Tactical Bootcamp!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have always been a risk taker! Without risks, you will always be stagnant. You will not grow with mitigating your personal and operational risks.
