Rising Stars: Meet Tonya & Katie Cummings of Stafford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya & Katie Cummings.

Hi Tonya & Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Risk is just a 4-letter word that simply means: You have one life to live, go for it, take a chance, and believe in yourself. My mother took the risk to Homeschool me at 6 years-old. Creating a curriculum to fit my learning style. Katie’s Cakes was simply started from taking a risk talking to the Post Office Lady about my business. I had such great confidence in myself that I told her I would make a Lemon Pound Cake for $20.00. That was on June 12, 2020 and my business has been great so far. I have been featured in so many interviews, newspapers, radio shows, and the biggest was Fox 5 in Washington, DC. We have started back for the holiday season and I also want to introduce Katie’s Cakes Master Class. In this class I teach kids my age how to bake their very own Katie’s Pound Cake and for Thanksgiving my mom and I will be teaching a Live Zoom Katie’s Cakes Master Class on how to make a Homemade Pound Cake.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road working with only one mixer and when we was shipping our cakes. We ran into problems with the cakes being damage and having unhappy customers. This is why we are no longer shipping our cakes it is curbside pickup only.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am Tonya the owner and baker of Katie’s Cakes that has been teaching my now 10-year-old daughter Katie the family recipes. The Pound Cake we make is my grandmother’s recipe. I saw a passion in Katie about baking. Katie is a 4-year homeschool student and I enjoy teaching her life skills.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Katie’s Cakes was started during Black Lives Matter June 2020. Katie wanted to bake cakes because “People were alone and they needed Katie’s Cakes to bring them LOVE. She is your average 8-year-old child when the business started. After we did the Juneteenth in 2020 Katie’s Cakes had her picture taken with The Delegate of Virginia Joshua Cole. Katie’s Cakes credits her Auntie/Manager Ebony for going above and beyond in getting her interviews. We have been on Black News Channel, Freelance Newspaper, Stafford Magazine, Katie’s Cakes did a video for The Social Institute, Katie’s Cakes donated 39-pound cakes to our local food pantry in Stafford, Katie’s Cakes was feature in The Shoutout Atlanta, and Fox 5 Washington, DC. We have many customers that love Katie personality, her people skills, and the love for people. Katie’s Cakes has been blessed and we Thank God for allowing her to spread her jubilant personality with people.
