Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynese Martin.
Lynese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up listening to a lot of blues and 90s R&B. My passion for music grew on me as I learned more about my voice and sound. It all started when I got into watching American Idol. It was season 3 and Fantasia was in it. I was five at the time and so inspired by how she was able to move people with her voice and raw talent. Like I was hella inspired. I taught myself how to sing by imitating my favorite artists from Alicia Keys to Christina Aguilera. Later took piano and voice and I fell more in love with music. Im still learning about my voice but I’ll say my Dad helped me appreciate old-school music and music in general. From him djing to blasting music around the house, did more than enough!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not even. I have been through a lot but I believe it was for a reason, to tell my story. From bad friendships & relationships to moving out of my hometown. I was lonely and sometimes I felt like not pursuing my dream I even dropped out of college as a music major. I had dark moments & got told a lot of No’s that nobody know about. I questioned where I was going all the time and still do lol but now I got a lot in me to keep pushing. It’s not supposed to be easy. This journey I’ve learned a lot about myself and as a songwriter, I’m grateful for all I’ve overcome & continue to overcome as it will make me, inspire me, and help me grow.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Singer-Songwriter. I create music for the ones who appreciate it, the ones who listen to not only the beat of a song but the words, how it’s delivered, its meaning etc. I write and sing to help heal myself and others.
I will say I’m extremely proud of my first EP called Love Lynese. I dropped in September. It definitely represents me and shows you the kind of person I am. This EP took a lot of weight off my chest. It helped me learn how to love and show up for myself.
My heart set me apart from others. How I am able to love freely allows me to stand out. I used to hate showing it to people thinking it would get me hurt but as I got older I realized there is nothing wrong with being warm and I want to remind people, always.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
PRACTICE. If you are passionate about anything, strengthen your craft. It’s like a muscle you can only get better. Learn from others and be patient. Prepare yourself for the day you make it out by PRACTICING.
I wish I knew that it’s rare people discover you lol. If you want to be seen, get out there for people to see you, that’s the only way. You can’t sit around hoping people find you. Be your number one supporter and promote your own self! I used to be extremely shy about putting myself out there. I would always think the worst until one day I remember watching an Ed Sheeran interview talking about the 10,000 hours theory basically saying you’ gotta get the bad songs, performances, etc out the way to get to the better ones. I ran with that idea and til this day it’s stuck with me.
