Meet Matthew Head

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Head.

Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a film and TV composer and music producer from Marietta, Georgia. I began playing music at the age of five and writing and creating my own music at 12. My mother had a heavy influence on me with music. My childhood home was filled with music such as jazz, gospel, classical, and an array of instrumentals that I would play and mimic. I began to create and experiment with instrumentals and tracks through the years.

I attended Savannah State University and continued creating music in my dorm room, leading me to a local hip-hop artist in the Savannah area. Through that artist, I began recording and producing music for other artists in Savannah. And against my parent’s wishes, I dropped out of school to pursue my dream of being a music producer.

I moved home and began working with local artists in the Atlanta area in a small studio in Smyrna, Georgia. I was then introduced to a local film production company that needed music for their film. I had no idea how to score a film but took a shot at it, and the film and music received rave reviews. With that success, I started to educate myself on film composition, and I haven’t looked back since.

Through years of composing music for independent films and commercials, I received the opportunity to produce the music for Oprah Winfrey’s television series, Greenleaf. I produced the music for two seasons, which led me to work alongside multi-award-winning producer Timbaland on Lionsgate/YouTube Premium series Step Up: High Water. I serve as the music/vocal producer for ABC Network’s Queens with music legends Brandy and Eve. With my accomplishments in music production, I started to compose the score for the Starz Network hit series, P-Valley, PBS documentary The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song, and Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, among several other films and documentaries.

Along the way, I received a few awards and accolades that I am very proud of. I’ve made some life-changing friendships and I am extremely excited about the future.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Typically, I want to say my road has been challenging, but my road has been smooth due to the enormous support of my wife, family, and friends. Throughout my journey, I’ve had to have a couple of reality checks and “come to Jesus” moments, but I never doubted my talents or ability. I have an undeniably strong faith in GOD and know what’s for me is for me. The entertainment industry is an unpredictable space and having that support system and my relationship with GOD keeps my road smooth and balanced.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Matthew Head Productions is my production company that specializes in music for film and television. I compose and create music for film and television series, documentaries, and commercials through my company.

My most notable credits are producing the music for Oprah Winfrey’s series Greenleaf, Lionsgate/Youtube Premium series Step Up: High Water, and ABC Network’s hit series Queens. Composing the music for the Starz series P-Valley, Lifetime’s Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, PBS’ documentary series The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song, Tri-Destined/BET series Carl Weber’s The Family Business, among other films and TV series.

I’ve won several awards and accolades through my company, including a regional Emmy Award, NAACP Image Award, A Stellar Award, and two Grammy nominations.

Georgia’s film and television boom has exploded, and I want to be the “Go To” guy for music in the film/TV space.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Working in the entertainment industry is a risk in itself. I view it as playing the lottery… Sometimes you have to bet on yourself, knowing the odds are against you. I’ve always been confident in myself with my musical abilities. Convincing others was the tricky part. So with that, you have to take the risk or, better yet, “leap of faith” to see where you land. I let my talents, attitude, and work ethic lead the way.
