Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Truong.
Hi Vivian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My interest in graphic design started on a whim when I had to select an elective for my freshman year of high school. After taking the intro class freshman year, I fell in love and knew that this was what I wanted my career to be. After taking graphic design classes throughout my high school years, I ended up graduating from the University of Georgia with a BFA degree in Graphic Design.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I truly believe that you have to trust the process no matter how hard you feel like you’re struggling right now. Since I graduated Fall of 2019 right at the cusp of the pandemic, I went from being extremely confident in knowing what I wanted to do to completely second-guessing myself throughout 2020. Because of the constant application rejections I would get, I started to think that I wasn’t cut out for the graphic design field. At one point, I considered completely changing my field and going back to school because it felt like no one wanted me. I started to lose faith in my design capabilities but also in myself. However, I was advised by my friend to enter the AIGA Rise-Up mentorship at the end of 2020 and my world completely changed. I was paired with an amazing mentor who helped me find my passion again in graphic design and opened my eyes to new opportunities. Through her, I’ve been able to network within a broader Atlanta design community which landed me my current job as a Junior Visual Designer at a marketing agency. No matter how difficult finding your path maybe now, always take the chances that come along because you never know where they may lead.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now, I design both print and digital collateral ranging from branding, UI/UX, motion graphics, and campaign assets. While I love working with all types of collateral, my specialty lies in motion graphics, specifically, working in After Effects. My proudest work will still have to be my senior capstone, Fem(me), where I created a minority female empowerment campaign. It made my heart feel so full when people who I never knew would come up to me to tell me how much the campaign resonated with them and how much they enjoyed looking at my work. I believe my sociology minor background sets me apart from others because I have a broader understanding of how society works and what messages would have the greatest impact on them. Designing with empathy has always been my number one belief as a designer because understanding who you’re designing for will make your design the most successful.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how diverse our city is and how there’s so much street art to see whenever you walk around. Pre-COVID, there was always something to do every weekend which means you would never get bored. I think I’m with the majority of the people of Atlanta when I have to say traffic is the absolute worst.
