Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Woods.
Hi Caleb, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up surrounded by talent and creativity. My dad is an artist and poet, my mother is a singer and a writer. My cousins rapped and produced and played piano. I started producing and recording when I was in middle school. I kept recording and doing art in high school. I started drawing and painting even younger than recording and producing. I was born in Atlanta, spent some of my younger years in South Carolina and came back to Georgia in 5th grade. My mom has Sickle Cell but has always done her best to look out for us. I’ve experienced homelessness and instability a lot during grade school but my mother was determined to get us through school and in the best situation possible. Once I graduated high school, I didn’t go directly to college because I couldn’t afford to go to SCAD even though I had gotten a partial scholarship. After a semester off, I ended up going to the Art Institute for a year for graphic design, unable to afford to continue there, I transferred to Georgia State for Art but truly, my heart was in music. I eventually graduated from SAE Institute for Audio Engineering. Now I do a combination of things and I came up with an event to incorporate all the things I love to do most called Herb+Colour. This allows me to paint, perform, produce, design, etc. with a platform.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles has been trying to balance surviving and pursuing my endeavors. There were plenty of times where I had to sacrifice or improvise to accomplish what I have so far.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think what sets me apart from others is my perspective because I’m always told it’s peculiar. As an artist, I rap, sing, produce, draw, paint, and do graphic design. In music, I specialize in sampling. Kanye is one of my biggest influences from how I put my tracks together to subject matter. In visual art, I specialize in portraits. I’ve been drawing people since I was 10, and I’m just looking to get better.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think I’m lucky to have ideas that resonate with people and friends that believe in me and what I want to accomplish.
