Today we’d like to introduce you to Katyna Lucas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m in school to be a lawyer and had been working as a paralegal for a few years when the pandemic hit and I was furlowed from my law firm. At that moment, I knew I had to open up multiple streams of income for my two children and the baby I was currently carrying. I had recently opened a virtual call center and was looking into opening a one stop shop beauty salon that could service all the needs for women. I had been doing research on different businesses I wanted to open and the beauty salon was my top pick for my next business venture. I started looking for salon locations with my realtor, looking for furniture and also recruiting women in the beauty industry to work in my salon. After I chose the perfect location for my salon. I had it renovated to fit the needs of the women I would have working in my salon. I created space for four stylists, two makeup artists, two nail techs and one lash tech. The first couple of months I made my profit back on everything I spent for my salon and to open it up. I’m now in my second year of having a salon and couldn’t be more happier. I have an undeniable love for the beauty industry and creating women bosses. I’m now looking into expanding by getting salon suites to be able to appeal to those that would like their privacy while tending to their clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first couple of months after I opened, I was solely focused on making sure I was able to get back my investment while at the same time picking the correct team of ladies to work in my salon. I’m not gone lie the first groups of girls I hired were not at all up to par for what I envisioned for my salon. Being a new business owner in the beauty industry and not actually providing a service myself in my salon was an eye-opener. I had to teach women how to be business-oriented, how to get clientele and keep them as clients. Those three things instilled in someone was hard to come by so I decided to find people that were more established in the beauty industry and had some clientele. I knew I could always mode my people into businesswomen while teaching them how to successfully market to get more clientele and keep recurring clients. The people working in my salon currently have all been with me for a while and I love them. We are a family and love working as a team to build each other up in the industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I own Uniqke Styles Beauty Salon and I create and help mold bosses. I personally do not do anything in the hair industry but I loved the idea of opening a one stop shop for myself and other women who travel to multiple places to get things done. My salon is a one stop shop offering hair, nails, makeup and lashes. I’m always hiring and looking for the next boss to help expand their business in my salon.
