Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammie M.. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Tammie M. is a New York Native Forensic Accountant and Former IRS Field Agent.
Starting her studies of accounting in the 9th grade, Tammie holds a Masters Degree in Science of Accountancy, Certification as a Fraud Examination and is also an Enrolled Agent with the IRS.
Taking interest in taxation early in Tammie’s career, Tammie pursued employment with IRS and secured a position as a Revenue Agent in the Small Business/Self-Employed sector and remained in that position for six years. Hungry to obtain more knowledge and to develop a broader investigative skillset, Tammie pursued and secured a Financial Investigative Government position in NYC.
After 15 years of working for the Government, Tammie decided it was time to take her inside knowledge and help the public. Today, Tammie is assisting individuals and businesses through successful Tax Audits with the IRS and is also teaching Tax Professionals through a course and mentoring and partnering with Tax Offices how to do the same.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been and still are many days and nights when I don’t sleep, don’t eat and just focus on my goals. In the beginning of my journey, I felt like being the youngest, black and a female at a decision-making table was crippling at times. I had to learn that it’s actually my strongest attribute.
This Tax Audit game is not welcoming and Auditors never expect what I deliver. I walk in and speak the same language as them and declare war for my clients, and win!
This has been a bumpy ride…..but God though!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Working for the IRS was one of the best jobs I ever had. As a field Auditor you move as if you’re “self/employed”. You’re responsible for your case from beginning to end. As a result, you determine the outcome of an audit. I learned so much about people, businesses, other Tax professionals and most of all, that’s where I discovered my love for taxation and wanting to help the public.
When I first started working for the IRS, I was audited and owed $12k. At that time, I didn’t understand tax law. After nine months of training with the IRS, I realized that the Auditor did not assert the Tax Law on behalf and took advantage of my lack of knowledge. Me…her own coworker. I took it personal. At that moment, I knew that I needed to learn as much as I could from the inside, get out and help others like me.
What makes you happy?
Happiness is an inside job! I try my best to keep a smile on my own face. So whether it’s an extra scoop of ice cream on my sundae or ticking my kids until they cry happy tears…if it makes me happy, I’m doing it!
