Today we’d like to introduce you to Zion Thomas.
Hi Zion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an r&b hip hop artist, engineer, and videographer/editor and the CEO of my brand/ company Young & Winning … I graduated from a music school called SAE Institute (sound of audio engineering) in 2018, I received an associate of science in audio engineering. My earliest memory of music is as early as I can remember I always knew I would be somewhere in the entertainment industry. My father has been around music before I was born so I’ve actually grew up around music and in and out studios all of my life. My first song I ever recorded was at the age of 12 years. Songs I remember from my childhood are mostly hip hop and r&b songs for the most part, I listen to artists that really speak in their music. During these years before I graduated high school, I took piano classes also which I learned how to play and read notes. In high school, I played in a few concerts for the school. Also, I performed plenty of other places due to me being an artist. I remember I performed in middle school talent show one of my personal songs when I was in a music group and we won first place.
My taste in music informs who I am because it lets me express my own feelings and thoughts on to paper. I include music in my life everyday and I have my own studio in my house where I record and write songs almost all day Everyday it’s a true fashion. I like old school music and new school hip hop and r&b. This music is the new generation and it speaks to me in many ways. The only thing I can say I don’t like about music now is how songs nowadays don’t have meaning to them no more. I have a high value for music which is why most of my inspirations are people like Tupac, Erykah Badu, JCole, Lauren hill, missy Elliot, etc. As of right now, I am working as a PA( production assistant) for VH1 LHHATL (love and hiphop Atlanta) while also pursuing my music dream and brand “Young & Winning”. My artist name is ZionAlex, my first name is Zion and my middle name is Alexandria! The Young and winning goal is to encourage and inspire every young person interested in the music, television, radio and film industry to learn the S.T.E.A.M Concepts behind each of the creative arts career fields and to elevate themselves to achieve their next level of artistic success.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most struggle out of being an independent artist and managing yourself when it comes to paying for everything on top of Coordinating everything. Of course, it is a struggle to maintain all of that on top of everyday life struggles, I always find a way to make it through of course with the help of others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an artist, I started off in a music group and later on became a solo independent artist. I’ve so far dropped my most recent singles entitled “Butterflies” “Take Away” “Can’t Trip” “FWM”, so on and so on. I am surely working on my first ep soon then elevate next to an album. I will consider myself more on the R&B side of music then HipHop only because I am more confident in my singing then rapping but I am definitely a multi-talented artist. I’m most proud of how far I came in the entertainment industry from working for VH1 and building my team right with me. Even tho I went to a music school for engineering, I realized I was more visual than hearing. I took it upon me to teach myself videography where I learned how to shoot, film and edit. I am pretty confident with the software premier pro which is what I currently edit on. I mostly shoot bts (behind the scenes footage) “ZionAlex Productions”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
When it comes to luck because I am not where I want to be yet, money I will say is the most luck and bad luck thing as an independent artist. One day I have it and the next day, I don’t. One day I can afford to pay for a music video, a studio session, etc. but one day life struggles come in and I have to hold off on my music life and work a job which sometimes interferes with my music life.
