Hidden Gems: Meet Nai Shobowale of Black Marriage Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nai Shobowale.

Hi Nai, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Although I embraced my single life, I ran into one problem when I got married. I didn’t have many married friends. It was hard to find friends that we could be transparent with and understood journey of being newlyweds. I found there to be plenty of opportunities and events for single people, but not many for married couples to have fun. There aren’t many safe avenues by which you connect with black married couples to share like-minded stories.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have faced many obstacles on this journey to better black marriage. As our primary mission is to bring couples together, so it has been really hard to do so with COVID-19. We want to provide a safe space without stopping. We’ve had to relay on technology to host virtual couples nights.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black Marriage Club?
Black Marriage Club is aiming to be the largest marriage social club, providing the resources and support for black marriages to thrive. Aiming to be the host of the largest black marriage conferences, retreats, and social events. After a double date with another married couple, The Black Marriage Club was born. From our curated date nights, the winning wives annual brunch and couples retreats, I want to change the narrative of black marriage. Atlanta is our second biggest chapter of Black Marriage Club (BMC). With thousands of couples in the greater Atlanta attending our couples monthly meet-ups. We also act an avenue to connect our members to marriage mental health services. We also pride ourselves in launching a mental health directory for black married couples in 2023. Couples can utilize this directory to find their nearest Black Marriage Club chapter, along with a marriage therapist, sexologist, childcare center, realtors and more. We are proud to be connected to over 130,00 people across all social media platforms. We are also in our final stages of releasing our first Black Marriage Documentary: Same Love, Different Stories. A short film displaying the love and plight of seven married couples in Black Marriage Club. Filmed in Houston, TX and will be released this year (2022).

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It makes me happy to see marriages thrive. What makes me even more happier is to see couples thrive through adversity and overcome divorce or separation.
