Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlon Watson.
Hi Marlon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began back in 1985 when the era of rap music was the buzz of the airways on radio and television. During this time and growing up in North Carolina, I got a heavy dose of east coast music specifically from artists from New York. These artists would travel frequently to my home state for shows and concerts to which me and my friends would often partake on the weekends. The entire rap culture at that time which included clothing, hats, shoes, dancing just made an everlasting impression on me as this is considered the golden era of rap music. In addition to this, I was very active in sports and got a large dose of other music genres from friends and rivals which got me to purchase my first turntables, mixer, speakers and headphones with the part-time job I had at the time. During my free time, I would practice mixing and scratching in my bedroom for hours at a time. One Saturday evening, my friend and nationally regarded DJ Soundmachine (Troy Cormack) allowed me to spin at a local teenage nightclub called the Deck. As I plugged in and mixed a new MC Lyte song he commented “that was a dope mix” which excited me and this is where my professional journey started.
Over the course of 30 plus years, I have had to pleasure of doing national festivals, weddings, corporate and private events all over the world meeting wonderful people and bringing joy into their ears in the form of music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My DJ path has had trials and tribulations along the way which include developing a strong market presence, sourcing suitable equipment, funding just to name a few things. Fortunately as I grew as a business owner, I was able to work these items out with better marketing efforts, trusted advisors and mentors.
