Check Out Bruce Nix’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bruce L. Nix, Jr.

Hi Bruce, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a small town in southern Alabama called Andalusia. I was always interested in creativity and being artistic. I used to draw all the time and always thought that I would grow up being some type of an artist.

After graduating High School, I attended Alabama A&M University in Hunstville, Alabama. I originally was an art major but later changed, studied, and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications, with a concentration in video production. It was during my time at A&M that I discovered a love for television and film. Prior to starting my production company, I spent almost 12 years as a photojournalist working in News and broadcasting, where I won numerous AP awards as well as an NABJ Award for Television for the Feature Series: Long Form “Teen Issues”.

I’m a passionate believer in entrepreneurship, and while still working in broadcasting, in 2010 I decided to start my own video production company. Believing in myself and in my gifts, in 2015 I pursued my passion full time, leaving behind the comfort of a steady job and paycheck. Driven for success, I hit the ground running and haven’t looked back.

Since that time, I’ve been able to produce content for television, digital, and multimedia platforms. I am the founder and owner of Undercover Entertainment, LLC., which is a video production company located in Birmingham, AL. I wear many hats, serving as director, producer, writer, cinematographer, and editor on various projects.

Through Undercover Entertainment, I’ve produced and filmed numerous projects and events. Some of my most notable work has been for clients such as The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials or ASTHO, teaming to produce a series of CDC-funded training videos and training curricula for the Federated States of Micronesia. Other clients include The Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama, The American Heart Association, The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama or EDPA, where I produce video content for their Alabama Launchpad program. I’ve also done work with the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, The City of Birmingham, Alabama Power/Southern Company, Darkness to Light Films, as well as Yes We Code, which is an organization founded by international recording artist Prince, and headed up by CNN’s Van Jones. I also worked on the Bronze Telly Award-winning documentary STAND!: Untold Stories From the Civil Rights Movement, where I served as a Producer, Director of Photography, and editor. I’m also an award-winning filmmaker, winning “Best Short Film” Audience Choice at the Silver Screen International Film Festival and “Best Director” at the Black Film Festival Atlanta for the film “I am not Your Enemy”. My work has been featured on BET, PBS, and ESPN among many other media outlets.

I wake up every morning with a big smile on my face knowing that I get the opportunity to do what it is that I’m most passionate about, which is telling stories, creating memories, and bringing visions to life. I ultimately would like to use my gift as a platform so that I may be able to help others. Through my creativity and desire to be the best at what I do, I hope to deliver feature films and original programming for all to enjoy, and currently have several projects that are in early development.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I lost my mother at an early age. I was about 18 when she passed. That affected me tremendously. 11 years and a day after her passing, I lost my father, which again greatly impacted me. Without knowing it at the time, I dealt with depression and never really dealt with their loss. I felt as if I had no direction and lived somewhat reckless.

I was working in broadcasting and felt like I was never going to go much further in my career than I was at that point. People that had left the business would always ask how much longer I would be there. My response was always, “when the time is right”. Of course, there never really is a right time to leave a job. I began looking for other opportunities, and there was one opportunity that was presented. I was actually offered the job, but I would like to say that God redirected my path, closed that door, but began to open other doors.

At this time, I was at a point where it was now or never, in terms of me trying to be successful as the owner of my own company. It was very scary, but I trusted the process, made the leap and I haven’t looked back. There have been a few bumps very early on, but for the most part, ever since starting this journey, there has been growth each year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself to be a creative spirit. I’m a cinematographer, director, producer, writer, editor, but above all, I’m a storyteller. I love to tell stories, specifically people-focused stories. I’m proud of the work that I was able to do on our short film “I am not your Enemy”. Every accomplishment is a new experience. I don’t necessarily value one over the other. I will say that the accolades and awards that I’ve won outside of working in broadcasting since starting my own company hold a special place in my heart due to me standing on my own, but each accomplishment truly does hold a special place in my heart.

I think what separates me from the rest is my drive, not necessarily to be the best, but to do my best in producing content that has impact and meaning and to let everyone else speak on who’s the best. I feel that your work is a representation of who you are, so I will let my work speak for me.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m actually a huge “nerd”. I grew up reading comic books, which is one of the reasons that I loved to draw when I was younger, I used to collect them, as well as basketball and baseball cards. I love the whole comic book movie explosion that has happened over the last ten years or so, and I like a lot of sci-fi, but that would be what many may not know about me.
