Rising Stars: Meet Carlos Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Turner.

Carlos, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was a kid, I would repair cassette tapes for the local known Dj from my hometown of Haddock, GA. I start playing music from a boom box around my friends and family at the park. No intention of becoming a Dj. One day I just wanted to throw a party and bought some fisher price speakers. Not many people showed up, but people started asking me to Dj their events. I didn’t consider myself a Dj. In fact, I still don’t. I used to DJ small events and clubs and got burnt out, wasn’t making a lot of money, and stopped Djing. For 5 or 6 years, Until one day back in 2008 or 2009, I was tailgating at Falcons games with some guys I had just started hanging with, and the Dj they hired would not sometimes show up. So one day, I told them I could Dj. But I didn’t have any equipment; two of the guys bought me some speakers, and once I started. I began to get requests to Dj more significant events in upscale venues. However, I noticed I was not receiving proper payment. So I begin to add multiple options for services. Some items are up lights, cold—sparkles, dancing on a cloud, photo 360, etc. I went from djing two times a month for people I know to 4 to 8 times each month for people I never knew before djing their event. My business approach has outgrown my Dj skills. One thing has remained the same since my first event. I still get nervous before every event I DJ.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, no, it hasn’t. Some of the equipment I purchased in the past was not top rate. My transportation ability was limited. I couldn’t develop a clientele. My system items were stolen four-time out of my house and garage. My business practices were not consistent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Dj services, I specialize in providing complete entertainment services, I am known for delivering a one-stop-shop. I am proud that other family members can benefit from the success of the entertainment business. I think what sets me apart is that I provide an experience that my customer’s guest take home and a subject of conversation about the event for years to come.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be scared to try something outside of your comfort level. Success is for you to measure and no one else. Believing in yourself is the best way to know what works well for you.
