Today we’d like to introduce you to Landon Springs.
Hi Landon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Food was always a big deal for me growing up. My mother and grandmother were influential in my interest in cooking at an early age. I trained at Paul Smith College of arts and sciences, class of 2004. I received a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts and service management. I have been in the business now professionally for 21 years. During that time, from the age of 19, I have managed several luxury properties and high-end restaurants including a few locals ones: Château élan winery and resort, the mansion on Peachtree and Ruth’s Chris steakhouse. I have also managed to create a personal private chef business where I am blessed to have celebrity clients and many affluent people and corporate venues throughout Atlanta. Culinary Arts is my passion and I am in moving forward and sharing it with the world with instructional lessons now through zoom classes. I have tons of instructor experience as a high school culinary instructor as well as an adult instructor here at the Viking cooking school and Vino Venue in Atlanta.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not a smooth road, in an African-American Chef in management when I came along was not the norm. Just like in many other jobs, you have to fight for your place in the world and you have to fight even more so when you’re a black man. It’s not been easy, but all part of the process. All of my past gigs, I am proud to say I could go back and work at any of my past jobs. One of the major struggles along the way was when I was a young Chef about 23-24. Being looked over for a jobs and knew and I thought I was ready for but I wasn’t enough…it’s something about the wisdom you gain from aging, it truly shines a light on the necessary stages for your career growth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a private chef. I cook for private events such as weddings, birthdays graduations, catering, intimate dinners for two, etc. My cuisine is fusion cuisine. I specialize in southern cuisine. I am most proud of my day at 10-year-old daughter Sage. She’s the one important thing that reminds me that all of the stuff we do here on earth it’s just background noise. My cooking style is different from others be My fusion combinations are from all over the world. I mean on one plate, you may see foods or cooking styles from two or three different countries. I love the ability of freedom of expression through food.
What makes you happy?
Food makes me happy, I often joke with my clients that food is your first love. I mean think about it, when a baby is firstborn, it’s looking for food, not its mother. It’s simple, imagine the smells of bacon or chocolate or fresh baked yeast rolls and onions carmelizing… all of these things put you in an instant state of mind or take you back to a place of happiness, food is love. I get to spread love Every time someone eats my food. It always amazes me how food brings even strangers together. Food is a universal language.
