Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel “Rae” Reeves.
Hi Rachel “Rae”, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My willingness to help others and be involved in making a difference was evident from very young. The older I got, the more I wanted to do. The greater impact I wanted to make. I always worked in customer-facing roles for some big name companies and organizations. I had to find a way to reach more people, work for myself and still travel down a path that was right for me and my career goals.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being successful is never easy. Anyone who tells you differently is not being forthcoming. I struggled with finding my identity and what my true skill sets were. I knew I was a top performer at work. I knew I was good at organizing and keeping accurate records. I was friendly, personable, and dependable. I had to sit down and really decipher what I was good at and create a job for myself. I also struggled with marketing and promoting myself. There is no rule book. I had to accept the fact that preparation and confidence are also mapped into being an entrepreneur. The saying goes “closed mouths don’t get fed”. So now, I make a great effort to reach out to family, friends and mentors if any challenges arise that I need a little push with.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a New York City based Workforce Development Specialist, Social Media Influencer and Resume Writer. I understand the importance of career growth and continuous skill-building. As a millennial, I have invested my career in unmatched customer service, excelling as a Workforce Development and Training pioneer in government and private sector agencies and ensuring that youth and people of color have the tools they need to succeed. I began my career as a Human Resources Receptionist for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection in 2018 and birthed Resumes by Rae in 2019.
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic when the world came to a halt, I took the initiative to outreach within my community. In Spring 2021, I offered time and resources to the Queens Community House Job Club and The High School for Law Enforcement and Public Safety. With The Great Resignation shifting entry-level to executive professionals nationwide, these and other community activities have emphasized to me that the need for a robust resume is everlasting and that my impact is not going unnoticed. I have gained clients from near and far – New York, Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts and The Cayman Islands
I served as a Human Resources Receptionist, Processing & Onboarding Assistant, Workforce Development Coordinator, and Employment Coordinator. Currently, I am in a Training Coordinator role at a financial institution. Resumes by Rae continues to offer professional resume building and writing services and workshops nationwide.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I typically do not consider myself a risk-taker. We associate risks with danger and harm, right? I am a thinker and planner so I do not willingly take risks without being strategic about them first. However, the pandemic has shifted that side of me. During that period, I had nothing but time to put my ideas on paper and into action. I found that taking risks can be rewarding and essential for growth as a person and professional. I moved to a Trainer role in April 2020 and studied public speaking to excel in this role. Shortly thereafter, I decided to expand Resumes by Rae by offering virtual workshops. It was definitely worth the “risk” because I have been able to connect with so many individuals who were in need of my services and did not know how they were going to get them otherwise.
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the community organizations responsible for the growth of Resumes by Rae – MomMob Worldwide in Atlanta, GA and The BlaQue Resource Network in Queens, NY. Being born and raised in Queens, NY and spending ten vital years in the Metro Atlanta area, it is comforting and reassuring to have support from state to state.
