Today we’d like to introduce you to Xaiken Ford.
Xaiken, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first got into designing when I was very young 7-8 years old just playing around with fabrics, a needle and thread-making doll clothes. I’d draw a bunch of dress sketches and cut up magazines of outfits I loved. As I grew older, I took sewing lessons from my mentor who I was also interning for at a bridal shop when I was 16. Before graduating high school, I made my dream prom dress and from that day, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Become a fashion designer! I went on to pursue my career and perfect my skills in college which I received an associate’s degree in fashion design. I started to get noticed and build clientele by posting and designing different designs and outfits for myself on social media. Word got around I was the best designer in queens and before I knew it, I was booked and busy! I couldn’t keep any of my retail jobs because I had so many custom orders. I felt my business was my baby, so I had to quit working there to focus. It meant more to me to work on my craft and build up my name. Fast forward to now years later, my business is still successful and I am working on my dress collection. I recently launched a clothing line inspired by my daughter’s paintings called Legacy New York. It’s women’s activewear, sweatsuits and two piece biker shorts sets. Very comfortable vibrant colors and made for everyday wear. For the future, I am looking forward to expanding my brand creating designs for kids and men.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been an easy, smooth road every journey has trials and tribulations but I always keep faith and say my prayers. I am always at a battle with myself I feel as though it’s always me vs me. Starting a business is never easy! You come across many struggles along the way, and it won’t always go exactly as planned. But it’s up to you to continue to work hard and push through no matter what. To be successful, you must fail and make those mistakes. That’s the only way you will learn and progress in life and in your business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My business is a black-owned business born in NYC. We recently relocated to NJ. I specialize in custom made designs such as Bridal, Prom, baby shower, birthday, and kid’s wear. I am most known for my eye-catching detailed gowns. Most of my clients I’ve never met before, we do everything virtually via FaceTime. Their dresses always fit so perfectly and beautifully. That’s what makes me stand apart from others. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are the fit is always just right on the body and the details are always so unique and different. I am most proud of how far I’ve come with my brand, continuing to grow getting bigger and better.
What were you like growing up?
I was very shy and quiet growing up. I stayed to myself, but I was also very popular. I always loved painting, dressing up and cooking. I had a crazy addiction to sneakers and colorful clothes. My style was always different from others. I’ve always been a helpful person to my family and friends also anyone can tell you I have a loving and caring heart! I’m all for being kind to others and showing gratitude.
