Hidden Gems: Meet Wanderlina Rivas of Bethel & Co Candle Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wanderlina Rivas.

Hi Wanderlina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I founded Bethel & co in 2018 while I was working a 9-5 & no longer felt fulfilled. I was tired of the monotony of the 9-5 & wanted to do something that was inspiring & allowed me to express my creativity. I started making candles because I noticed a pattern in the candles I was buying. They smelled great but whenever I lit a candle I couldn’t actually smell it. Candles for me always allowed me to unwind & relax when I got home from work, but when I saw I wasn’t getting the result from those candles I started thinking. I googled how to make candles, bought a kit & began making candles for my own. I soon found out that many of the candles I had in my home were filled with toxic ingredients.

As birthdays & occasions came up I gave them away to family members & co-workers as gifts. When I received the Amazing feedback I knew that this was something I was good at & wanted to pursue it to see how far I could take it. Not only do I enjoy the art of candle making, I love that I can express my creativity through scent & inspire others. Almost 4 years into my business I’ve been able to grow to be featured in boutiques all around the U.S. something that I always dreamed of that is now a reality.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The journey of entrepreneurship is far from a smooth road. There were many times when it was just trial and error. One of the struggles I’ve faced along the way is learning to adapt to circumstances. Being a small business owner, we need to learn to adapt to different circumstances like supply chain issues, adapting to COVID and how it affects our business. Sometimes you may not always get supplies on time but you still have orders that need to be shipped. So adapting is definitely a struggle that I’ve been working on overcoming.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I’ve always been a creative child. Being the youngest, I grew up watching my father express his creativity in so many ways. He was an artist, tailor, handyman & a man of many talents. I took after my father’s love for art & grew up drawing & painting. As I developed into the women I am today I found different ways to express my love for art. Before I founded bethel & co I was freelancing as a self-taught branding & graphic designer. Since little I’ve always loved drawing but never found myself being that good. I took my love for that into a more digital aspect & from that flourished this brand today.
