Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleyann Williams.
Hi Ashleyann, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a “shop baby” I literally grew up in the hair salon. My mother opened her first salon at 25 years old in New York as a single mother. I would work for her on the weekends as her shampoo girl and at such a young age the experience and tip money was insane. That definitely motivated me to want to become a hairstylist. I saw the freedom it brought along with making woman feel good about themselves. It was a win-win. My mother’s hustle definitely set the bar high for what I wanted to become as a woman in business and the hair industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth road but I feel like I had to go through every emotion to get where I am today. I moved to Charlotte in 2014 thinking I was going to take the city over doing hair and God humbled me fast! It was such a struggle being in a new city where I didn’t know a soul. I would get clients here and there Or I would travel to Atlanta to do hair but it wasn’t enough I knew I had to regroup. I took a break from doing hair and got into the health care industry after giving birth to my daughter. I felt like such a failure. I would still do clients on the side but it wasn’t my focus until people at the hospital were always asking who did my hair. Fast forward to 2017 I started educating myself on ig marketing and set a goal to build back up my clientele and get back to being my own boss again. By the end of 2019 not only did I build my clients back up but I had people from all over inquiring about me and then my StyleSeat Mother’s Day feature came out 2020 and my business just took off crazy during the pandemic. No matter the adversities I was facing I knew I couldn’t give up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a holistic haircare specialist my clients call me “The Plant Lady” lol. I focus on scalp and hair health overall by using plants, fruits and veggies. I grow my own herbs and vegetables and since I have created my own vegan hair care line that I use on my clients and also ship worldwide to help other women all over the world on their healthy hair journey. I’m known for reverting hair that’s been through trauma and getting it to grow back healthy. I post the before and after process on my Instagram to show women healthy hair is possible no matter the starting point. In Charlotte, I am located in a “hairbnb” which is actually a beautiful loft that I have converted into a beautiful hair studio I definitely feel like that sets me apart. It allows me to real have time with each client, offer privacy and serenity. I am so proud of the work I am doing and that I get to be my authentic self doing it. I love the life I am creating and the legacy I am building to leave behind for my daughter.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My favorite books that have helped me on my journey are the four agreements, the alchemist and the secret. My favorite podcast right now would have to be “Good Moms, Bad Choices” and “Social Proof”.
