Today we’d like to introduce you to LokeyTheEngineer.
Hi Lokey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from a very small town called Hardeeville, SC. There’s not a huge scene for music but I’ve had a love for producing and engineering since middle school. I started on FL studio 5 and I would stay on the computer for hours teaching myself how to make beats. Producing was definitely my first love.
After I learned how to make beats, I got into engineering and I would record people in my room or at their house. Later, I moved to Atlanta right out of high school in 2011 to go to the Atlanta Institute of Music. When I graduated college in 2014, I did a couple of internships until I decided I wanted to open my own studio. I opened my first location in 2015. It was one room and I did every session, every day. Two locations later. I now have a studio with three different rooms and we have a lineup of recording engineers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth. I would say I took a path that was difficult to learn and adjust to. I worked in a studio for a short amount of time before I decided to go into my own venture. Running a business, while still being very hands-on is a strenuous thing to do. Mentally and physically. I did every session for a long time before I finally let go a little and hired other engineers. I answered all phone calls and texts. I also didn’t have a background in business so I had to fail and learn a lot from my experiences. It’s a lot to juggle, especially if you have a family. Work-life balance was a struggle I had and still have to be very aware of.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in the recording process of audio engineering. I am really detail-oriented and that plays a huge role in my speed and my ability to see and do what a song needs as they are recording and during the mixing process. I’m known as Lokey and it’s really the best way to describe my personality. I do think it helps my clients to be relaxed during their sessions so they appreciate that. Something that sets me apart from others is my work ethic. I’m always striving to go further than I already have.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, I have to give credit to GOD for blessing me with everything I prayed for. My amazing wife, who has been very instrumental in my success and my family for being extremely supportive during this journey.
