Community Highlights: Meet Marvin James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin James.

Hi Marvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I reenlisted in the Army National Guard after the 911 attack, it was personal because I was raised in Jersey City NJ. while I was overseas I experienced a number of injuries and trauma. When returning back to GA, I was suffering from PTSD and other issues. I had to learn to speak up for myself and advocate for some of the soldiers that I served with. Through my journey, I found help from different organizations and hospitals Like the Shepherd Center Military Initiative Program. This is where I learned how to connect with the new person I was to become, they gave me hope and support. I was introduced to things like horseback riding and art. I was so angry and confused on the inside but the art allowed me to express myself as I used to when I was younger. By doing art I didn’t have to do it right or wrong, I didn’t have to speak about it at first then one day someone asked about a painting I did and I was able to share what I had been feeling through the Canvas. This was the beginning of newness for me. I was still recovering but felt like there must be a lot of veterans going through what I had been dealing with so with the help of some friends and the University of Tennesse school Of Business Veteran Entrepreneurship Program I founded The Veteran Art Society INC in Rock Hill SC 2015. I wanted veterans to know that we do recover and we have been striving to change lives one veteran at a time.

We have since relocated to the Macon Ga /Atlanta Area since I have been recovering right alongside our veterans over time I have learned the other important factors needed for our veterans to grow and enhancement such as installing gardening programs to encourage vets to eat better, I started sharing with the veteran in our groups about the amazing factors of superfoods like our Sea moss and herbal teas after experiencing a greater quality of life for myself. I used to be on up to seventeen different medications and I had a Dr tell me that my body could heal itself and how to. I have been fortunate to overcome a great deal of pain and other issues because of certain herbal teas, Water, and Sea moss. When people that once know me and what I had been through started to see such a big change in my life they insisted that I sell them some of the self-made products that I was using for myself. This Birthed my Business of helping people with health and wellness that now covers everything from hair growth to weight loss. My community started calling me the Sea Moss King so I accepted the name and include those who support my business as the Healthy people. So here I am a combat veteran-owned business named the Sea Moss King & Healthy People LLC DBA Seamossking.biz. a donation from every purchase helps support the Veteran Art Society INC.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the early obstacles were trying to build a Non Profit organization while still suffering and having little to no funding. Dealing with self-limitations like non-profit experiences the challenges of Getting educated for the task at hand for where the Veteran Art Society INC goes and reaches so many veterans. learning how to deal with the loss of veterans who just wouldn’t get a chance to experience a new way of life because of suicides and drug overdoses.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is Seamossking.biz. I am a veteran-owned business currently mentored by the Boots2business and SBA of GA through the Warner Robins Air force Base Vectr Center. My business sells herbal blends (liquid, dry) Juice, and tea. We sell raw sea moss and Gels to help the body thrive. I also encourage, coach, and do motivational speaking. I am most proud of the fact that I am changing lives through my ability to tell my story and then see other people get a breakthrough.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see my industry changing for the better in 5 -10 years more people will realize that our bodies deserve to be supplied with minerals and care to ensure a better Quality of life. The need for medication and the way we treat our bodies and who treat our bodies are going to experience a shift using my products and be a house whole name. As for the outlook for the next 5 years for the Veteran Art Society, I would love to see us secure a building and land space to hold classes for art, a gallery, record music, and television for our reach programs media center for tech classes and land to grow our own food to feed veterans that would be housed with us as well.
