Meet Olympia Mix-Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olympia Mix-Brown.

Hi Olympia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a true native of Atlanta, what some would call “Old Atlanta”. I graduated from North Atlanta High School and spent a good 10 years, respectively, away from home. After graduating from college from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. I joined AmeriCorps, where I discovered my passion for teaching. In 2014, I obtained my Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California, and I started my career teaching middle and high school Social Studies.

Fast forward to 2022, I made a huge decision to leave the classroom and focus on another passion of mine: Writing!

Although I had been writing papers, proposals and journal articles since college, I took a leap of faith and officially started my own Copy and Content business, Written By Olympia. In one year, it has taken off, and I’m truly grateful for all the opportunities. I have been in some pretty dope spaces with some amazing creatives and entrepreneurs. It’s been an incredible experience listening to so many different stories and really coaching my clients through the process of putting fresh words to their ideas. I create everything from newsletters to blogs, captions to emails, web copy, proposals, grants and everything in between. Anything with words, I can write!

Every day, I feel blessed to be able to combine my love of education, my passion for social justice and history, and my talent of writing and storytelling to create stories that represent my community, and highlight the diversity and strength we share between one another.

Exiting the classroom was tough, I love the students and inspiring kids that look like me… it’s so fulfilling, but teaching high school students can be… well it can be tough for sure!

I knew I needed to remember myself and create a space where I can also flourish, so Written by Olympia is like my gift to myself, and I truly have been enjoying the journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have definitely had my share of setbacks, but I was a fresh person in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit, I made it through the storm- literally and figuratively- so nothing will deter me from my purpose.

Teaching high school? Very Tough. Starting your own business? Extremely Difficult

But I’m so grateful for the bumps and bruises along the way. Every experience is really a lesson, and each lesson, whether good or bad, is a blessing in disguise. Replacing “I have to” with “I get to” has really changed my vibe on life.

I carry my faith with me every day. Success is in my blood, it’s tied to my legacy. So in essence, I can’t fail.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Absolutely. I guess the official name is Copywriter. For me I love the term “Storyteller”. When I taught history, I was teaching my students a story, so I really approach my writing in the same way. Everything I write becomes a story, with a story comes an emotion or feeling. Even if people forget the words, they will remember how they felt after they read it, that’s how I approach my work.

If you ever looked on a website or look at the description on a product, even the captions on a social media post. Someone had to write it, right? That’s what I do. I wear a lot of hats when it comes to writing, but each one brings out a different side of my creativity. I am the Lead Copywriter for 2 non-profit agencies, a design agency, I also serve as a Newsletter Editor for multiple companies, I’m Jr. Writer on a few teams, I’m currently helping a client with a book and I still make time to take on my own personal clients. That’s when you know you love what you do!

In the midst of all of that, I actually started another social media page, “Mymixedfeelings.” It’s playoff my maiden name “Mix” and the fact that I can have a million different feelings in one day. I use it as an outlet to handwrite motivational posts and messages using different audios as a background. I remember the first time one of my reels went viral, that was such an inspirational feeling, I try to post on there as much as possible. I really love reading all the comments, soon I’m hoping to create handwritten stationary!

I really pride myself on personalizing each piece of content and copy to the client’s needs. I try to build a relationship with them so I can capture the voice of their brand and deliver high-quality content. Language can be really powerful, so I really focus on ensuring that the words I use leave a lasting impression.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Yes, I definitely have to acknowledge and appreciate my tribe. My Mom is a huge source of motivation. She’s such a bright light in every space and I’m so grateful for the wisdom and strength she shares with me while I’m on my own journey. My family and friends have been nothing but supportive, I’m truly grateful for all of them!
