Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason “DJ Babyface205” Byers.
Hi Mason “DJ Babyface205”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My stage name is DJ Babyface. I was eight years old when I officially began my DJ business. During the pandemic when everything was shut down and we could not go anywhere, I turned to music for an outlet and entertainment. I have always loved music. I DJ my own 5th birthday party with the help of my cousin and mentor DJ Glaze Brown. Since beginning my DJ journey, I have met a lot of people that inspire and encourage me to continue my dreams. My dreams include being a guest DJ for celebrities’ kid parties, DJ at an arena or stadium or going on tour with kid performers like That Girl Lay Lay or Young Dylan. I love my crowds and they give me a lot of energy. I always dance with my guests. We often do a lot of TikTok dances and have lots of fun. Most recently I was asked to be the kid DJ for Streetz 94.5 Celebrity radio personality Miasia Symone Back to School Bash Sponsored by BMW of South Atlanta, Walmart, Rap Snacks and Coca-Cola. My next big event is for Alabama Family Connection Magazine, they are having a Big Family Playdate and I’m the guest DJ.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the challenges that I face as a kid DJ, is that some of the music is not kid-friendly. Other challenges is that I really feel bad when the crowds are not dancing or moving. It makes me feel like I’m not doing a good job. Technical challenges are the worst, when I set up outside you have to be careful because your equipment can overheat.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a dual entrepreneur. I have a candied popcorn business. When I started my first business, Pop shots by Mason. I made candied popcorn and sold it to my neighbors because I was bored and it gave me extra money. Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. I was on Youtube and found several ideas that I wanted to try so I discussed it with my mom. We order the ingredients and began making candied popcorn. I started signing up for pop-up shops and people started asking me to be a part of their pop-up events. Things grew very fast and became a bit overwhelming. At seven years old, I found myself not having fun but making a lot of money. As the pandemic continued to unfold and we were still staying home, I started listening to music more and looking at more DJs. That lead me to starting my DJ career. I enjoy listening to all genres of music. So now I have found a hobby that I can enjoy and make money. Music has really made my life good. As a DJ, I get to meet all types of people. A lot of people tell me how proud they are of me. People take a lot of pictures of me because most have never seen a kid DJ before. I am known as Alabama Youngest DJ. I am booked all over the United States. I love traveling, meeting people and going to different events. Some of the events I have DJ at includes Political Candidates Fun Day Events, Football camps, the Boys and Girls Club, Birthday Parties, Sneaker Balls, Back to School events, Church functions, Local Hospitals and Events for non-profit organizations. Back-to-school events are my favorite a lot of kids get to see me and it inspires me but I actually hope it inspires them.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
When I first started I was being told that I needed to just be a kid and do kid activities many thought that I probably was growing up too fast. One adult told me that I couldn’t get a scholarship being a DJ and I should play sports. Some of my friends joked because I did not play sports. I was picked on by others because I was different and wasn’t doing the “normal kid” activities. It made me feel sad. My mom then changed my environment and I joined a community of other kid entrepreneurs. I have a lot of kid entrepreneur friends now. I have met so many other kid entrepreneurs that have experienced the same hardships as myself. I have learned to be patient and to be nicer to myself. I have gained a level of self-confidence that has and will assist me in the future. I’m often asked to speak to encourage other kids most being older than me. I tell them it’s okay to be different work hard and have fun. I also learn from other DJs that have offered to teach me the industry, starting with the set-up, breakdown, using the mics correctly, how to mix songs, and which equipment to buy. I have the most fun working beside other DJ that enjoy their craft as I do. I’ve learned to love myself and to try my best. My mom is my number one fan, she always encourages me to do my best at whatever and make sure I’m having fun.
