Daily Inspiration: Meet Samantha May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha May.

Hi Samantha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started photography as a hobby when I had my first baby a little over eight years ago. I decided to get certified and started taking clients; I knew it was what I wanted to pursue for my life plan. I enjoy being a photographer for so many reasons, but there’s just something about capturing raw and real moments that made me fall in love with this business. Being able to deliver lifelong memories of my client’s special moments is what photography is all about for me. I have grown and learned so much throughout the years and I am so proud of how far I have come. I would love to do this full-time and get to a point where I am busy year-round and have a booming business that supports me and my babies.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a slightly bumpy road over the years. I started my photography journey while living in Upstate New York; since I have moved states twice. Starting over and finding new clients can be a difficult task, but you have to do whatever it takes to grow your business. Perseverance and drive will get you where you need to be as long as you don’t give up. I will always push forward no matter how many obstacles get in my way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would say I specialize in traditional and lifestyle photography. I want to move into a place where I am doing more weddings as well. I am most proud of how far I have come. I am self-taught and when I go back and look at where I began and compare to where I am now, I am so amazed. I believe what sets me apart is that I really LOVE photography, it is my true passion. I started out as a hobbyist and wanted to turn something I loved into my lifetime career. Because I have such a passion for this I believe I give people the very best!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I believe to learn and become the best you can be, you have to learn from any and all avenues you can find. I have researched, read books and watched countless videos to learn as much as possible. I don’t feel like one specific thing helped me more than the other, but a mixture of everything that has brought me so much knowledge in the field.
