Today we’d like to introduce you to Yours Truly, Jai.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up singing in church. The church I came up in is a church of Christ, and we didn’t utilize instruments, so the sounds of our voices, hand claps, and foot stomps was all we had. From there, I realized my love for music. My mom had me young, so she shared her love for music with me too. I have insanely vivid memories of being in the car with my mom and watching her jam out to Destiny’s Child, Nivea, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Tweet and more. This era in my life shaped me!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you mix business and the love of art, it can get very tricky. The music industry is a big pot of egos, disingenuous, & power-driven people and I’ve had a small taste of it. I think staying true to self is the best thing one can do while trying to break through this industry. I, myself have had to do lots of self-reflecting and just spending time with self, in general, to make sure everything on my end was the way I wanted/want it to be. I know I won’t always be understood but the one thing I can do is present myself as the imperfect, open-minded, carefree, outgoing, and silly gal I am.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I just love music, the creation, the history, the production, the different techniques different people have, the lyricism, the instrumental aspect of songs.. everything. I eventually want to learn to do everything, raise my price up a lil. I specialize in singing and songwriting right now and I dabble in production. That’ll change very soon. I’m super proud of everything I’ve put out.. from singles to projects… It takes real courage to release art, you’re sharing vulnerable pieces of Self with the world. I like to think I’m multifaceted and I’m not afraid to step outside of my comfort zone. If I’m feeling country one day, I’ll do it, if I’m feeling like doing a little alternative vibe, I go for it. I don’t like being put in a box.
What are your plans for the future?
I haven’t really solidified any plans. I’m just going wherever God decides to take me. I’m listening to and trusting my intuition, something I’ve had trouble with in the past. I’m looking forward to more opportunities to LEARN and be educated. Sharpening my sword. I have a lot of things coming up in the near future that I’m excited to share. This chapter feels good and worth it.
