Inspiring Conversations with Finichia Hoskins of Speech Works Speech & Language Services’

Today we’d like to introduce you to Finichia Hoskins.

Hi Finichia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my speech therapy practice about 12 years ago and my brand as a content creator about 8 years ago. I took a long hiatus from blogging and but relaunched Fancy Curves about a year and a half ago. My speech therapy practice specializes in early intervention and autism. Initially, when I finished graduate school, I was servicing children in the school system. It only took me one year to know that was not the setting I wanted to be in. Frustrated with the politics and high caseloads, I took a step out on faith and started Speech Works Speech & Language Services. I started out my first year going home health only, but then I started to become inundated with referrals, so I transitioned into a brick and mortar location.

Fancy Curves is definitely a separate business that allows me to have an outlet to create content around the things that I am passionate about; faith, fashion, and decorating. It is my prayer that I will start to generate revenue from the content I create.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. The pandemic hit my business hard. In 2019 when the world was on lockdown, I had to transition to teletherapy for 16 long months. This was not an easy transition for me because of the population of children I work with. Since most of my clients and referrals are extremely young or have undiagnosed autism, teletherapy was not an option… Needless to say, I lost more than half my income and really wasn’t able to generate new income because of the type of referrals I received. I went back to in-person services in July 2021, but trying to recover from a 17 months loss hasn’t been easy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Speech Works Speech & Language Services’?
Speech Works is a small private practice located in southwest Atlanta. We specialize in providing speech and language services to children 18 months to 18 years of age with a specialization in the birth to three population and autism. I am proud that my business not only provides excellent service to help children achieve their highest potential, but I’m proud to be an advocate black children that fall on the spectrum. Statistics show that black boys and girls miss out on critical early intervention services that are available because of missed diagnosis’. Many of our children are not being diagnosed until school age, causing a three or four years window of critical services not being provided. They miss an imperative developmental window that research has shown allows these Neurodiverse children to thrive more.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Find a mentor who is in the field. There’s so much about private practice that you can only learn from experience; the good, bad, and ugly of it all.
