Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Surles-Walker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up with parents who both emphasized being proud of who I am in terms of being an African American woman and my ethnicity. My sister and I both have African names – my name is Jamila (Swahili) and my sister’s name is Kenya. They were always encouraging and positive and told us we could do anything we put our minds to. I started my business wanting other business owners who were like myself to encourage others to know they are gifted and talented and could be successful as well. In my business, I created platforms to highlight those who were using their gifts and talents in business for positive contributions in their community. I also wanted to help business owners to grow using social media and the media. The goal was to change the narrative in our communities and increase our economic footing which ultimately will help stabilize and support our circle of influence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road because initially it was just a vision to be able to help businesses and different entities to gain exposure and my background is in Healthcare. I always knew that I wanted to be able to use my education to better our community and for the greater good. I realized that the media did not always support the cause of the underserved communities. I wanted to be able to give inspiration through ingenuity, entertainment, and business savvy. I am a huge fan of reality shows and was happy to see shows like “Married to Medicine” and even the “Real Housewives” franchise because they showed me success was possible. I wanted to be able to do the same however I wanted to play up on the work ethic, education, skills, and innovation. It was something that I was passionate about but had no knowledge of, so I had to learn a totally different industry and network quite a bit to perfect my craft. There was a learning curve there and there was continuous learning as I added services so I’m thankful for everyone who took a chance and supported my business and vision.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a Media, Marketing, and PR company. We specialize in video marketing which means we can create video content for your social media pages. We also do social media marketing so we will schedule the content and manage your pages if needed. We can get articles written in NBC, CBS, and ABC affiliate digital outlets. If you are interested in influencer marketing we can set you up with an influencer that can advertise on their pages due to their social media presence and audience engagement. We have expanded in Television with our Epic Entourage TV Network on Roku where we air the interviews with business owners and entertainers.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be going to the skating rings on the weekend because I was a huge music fan and loved to skate. It was a good outlet. I remember also going to beach, Disney, and several other places in Florida. Definitely a lot of good memories.
