Meet Jennifer Mitchell of Cakewalk in Athens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mitchell.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After moving to Athens, Georgia from Tampa, Florida in 2016, I knew I wanted to be involved in the community. I love meeting new people, bakeries, and historic homes. Luckily, all three came together, and rather quickly, Cakewalk was born. We are located on historic Milledge Avenue in a beautiful 1910 Victorian home. Buses full of University of Georgia students, people strolling down the sidewalk, and residents of the neighborhood make up our wonderful customers.

Has it been a smooth road?
To-date, it has been a rather smooth road. There are always a few bumps along the way but that is to be expected and for us, rather welcomed. We feel at home in our space and are excited to see how our new venture grows along with our community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cakewalk story. Tell us more about the business.
Cakewalk is a fun little bakeshop that offers not only delicious, from scratch, cakes, cookies and gooey butter bars but also coffee and gifts for special occasions. However, there is a little twist. We don’t bake a thing! We handpick our vendors from Athens and surrounding areas (Statham, Monroe, Lawrenceville) and have selected small businesses that offer memorable tastes which creates repeat customers. To us, attitude is as important as ingredients. A fair, friendly and positive approach to business and pricing is a winning combination for vendors and customers. Along with our bakery sweets, we offer gluten-free, vegan and organic choices.

We have simple coffees – and our popular espresso sugar cone lined with white chocolate inside. One sip of the rich, Italian espresso crossing over the white chocolate and you will be in love. To finish it off, eat the cone!

Our gift section has a collection of vintage, new and handmade items; from all natural dog treats by local Oscar Bites to gem and mineral jewelry made by Rockbelly of Athens. We have a little bit of everything and that’s the way we like it.
