Meet Shevon Walker of SpeechTree

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shevon Walker.

Hi Shevon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
With a background in communication and graduation very near in sight, I decided senior year of college (more like 3 months before graduation) that PR wasn’t the route I wanted to pursue anymore. You can imagine how my Mother felt that I got to the end and completely changed my mind!

I had a random meeting with a classmate who was pursuing a degree in speech pathology; something I’d never heard of but once I did my research, it was everything that I wanted and felt I needed to do.

So I took a chance on myself, applied to a university in Ireland for the master’s program in speech pathology, got accepted, showed up to classes the day before-and with my mother’s prayers, family support, and determination, the rest is history!

In 2014, I met the woman who would become a vital part to my success in speech therapy, Tiffani Monroe who is now my mentor and very good friend. Through her guidance, I took another chance on myself; becoming an entrepreneur and starting my own practice and it’s been one exciting roller coaster that I haven’t gotten off of.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As all entrepreneurs can attest, there is ups and downs, circles and triangles, lol! Never ever a straight line. There have been days I wanted to throw in the towel, many unpaid invoices due to mistakes made, many frustrations with parents and children wondering when they’ll communicate, many times children receiving unfavorable diagnosis. But there are more days of happiness, more days of testimonies from parents thanking me for helping their child say ‘momma, dada’, more times I’ve said ‘wow we did it’ then ‘I give up’.

Working as a pediatric speech pathologist, it is a great joy to have children run up to you and hug you. I even enjoy the days when children are sassy with me because there was a time that same child couldn’t speak or didn’t have the cognition to communicate their wants and needs-it brings great joy to see them progress.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
