Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquiz Edget.
Hi Marquiz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started when I was young in my hometown of Grenada, MS. My aunt who had a huge vcr collection was like our movie shop. And me, my mom and brothers would go and pick out movies from her collection. That was our main source of television at that time. But something clicked in me, I no longer watched movies the same as my family. I started studying them, learning names and roles and started memorizing their lines. And I did this with every movie I picked out. And I paid attention to how my family and friends responded to people acting and I wanted that. I wanted to be on tv. But it wasn’t cool to be an actor in my town, let alone my school so I focused all my energy into football. I played football all through high school and received a scholarship to play at the next level, college.
My first school I played for two years at Holmes Community College in Goodman, MS. I then transferred to Missouri Southern State University where I received a full ride to play football. And that’s where I revisited my love for acting. I added a minor in acting after my first semester there. I would get laughed at by my teammates as I would pass them by on my way to Theater class. But at that point, I wasn’t going to let people dictate what I wanted to do. My first ever performance was a stage play called Fences, which I grew to love that play. When I had to act out the play. I just felt freedom. The freedom to be whatever for a short period of time. After college, I ended up having the opportunity to play pro football. I started off with arena football playing for the Colorado crush and then the Omaha Beef. After that, I was invited to the 2017 Greenbay rookie Minicamp. I didn’t make the cut with the packers because of an injury in my neck. My first gig was in the film Brian Banks where I was one of the student lawyers. Being on set and in class was a huge difference but I felt I was well prepared.
After I had my small taste of my passion, I moved to Atlanta in hopes of expanding on my dreams and passion. I moved to Atlanta in the summer of 2018 and I got to work immediately. I signed to my first talent agency within 10 months of being here. And along came the modeling. Being a model and an actor played hand and hand. But of course, I’m more on the acting side. Since my move to Atlanta, I have been in many tv shows and movies, from marvel to The new Coming 2 American. I got to work with so many actors I idolize growing up but I never broke composer. I would tell myself their just talented humans like me and I belong here so I was never star-struck. I always looked at acting as a way of expressing yourself without being judged. To me, it’s total freedom. And I have helped many people who saw I could make it to the big screen from my small town in Grenada, Mississippi. I’ve given them all the advice I wish I had coming into this industry. And it feels real good to have people look up to you when all my life I was looked down on. My ultimate goal in life is I just want to do what I love and help people along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, it was a very tough road. Everything I did was on my own. I had no help from family or friends. I was learning as I go. Some Audition I would tell my agency I’m not ready for that role after I’ve tried to nail the audition and keep failing. I lost jobs over social media following base and due to a lack of resumes. So I had to connect with people that would help me get content like short films. And not having a fancy setup for my audition made it even harder to book jobs. It was a really rough beginning having to battle things I couldn’t control. But through it all, I like to thank my woman for always being my biggest supporter and helping book auditions by being my off-camera reader and pushing me every day to be great.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love being an Actor/model. I’m more known for football because I was the only one from my class that made it to the NFL. But later, I found out football wasn’t my main passion. It was acting and just being me. I’m most proud of my first SAG role in a Steven Harvey commercial. Where I was hired for my body. They placed Steven’s head on my body and made him look like he fit. I think what sets me apart is my drive to achieve goals. My hunger for knowledge in this industry. The fact that I don’t want to be labeled as an actor who can only play one type of role, I want to be versatile.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan for the future is to be the best version of myself that I can be. I want to be known as one of the greats. And also of course marriage. There a couple of projects that I’m involved with now which is my biggest challenge is staying busy.
