Conversations with Victoria Carlos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Carlos.

Hi Victoria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have this really wild testimony of how God told me to quit my dream job and go find my ancestors. After pretending not to hear His message, I continued working at my job until God got me laid off on Ash Wednesday, 2015. LOL.

So for seven years, I went on a hunt to go find my ancestors, eventually; I did find my Kunta Kinte. Not only that, I came face to face with the granddaughter of my ancestor’s slave owner. This encounter changed my life.

You can read all about it in my book called “AKATA: The Saga of American Girl Finding Her Roots” available on Amazon.

I believe I am on a mission to help inspire the youth to be the historians in their families and spark racial healing in America.

I am hosting a FREE virtual. book launch on Dec. 17th, 2022 at 3:00pm EST. Visit AKATATHEBOOK.eventbrite.com

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
HA! I was Jonah. God had to swallow me in the belly of a big fish to get to find my ancestors. Part of the struggle was that I was dealing with a lack of identity, which manifested in a form of self-hate and anti-blackness. I know… that’s a lot!

On top of that, this journey was originally supposed to be a film. But after my ex, who was my producer, and I parted ways, I had to leave the film with him. I went through a really dark period for about a year and a half. I felt like this was my life’s work. Now the film is a book, which I believe will be turned into a movie in the future.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My primary job is being a stay-at-home mother to my two young kings under two. I am a published author. I have several works coming down the pipeline, including children’s books. My third job is a virtual tutor. I teach children from kindergarten all the way up to high school. My subjects include: reading, writing, public speaking, geneaology, and SAT prep.

What matters most to you?
There are two things in life that matter to me the most. God first, family second!

Why? I gave my life to Christ at the age of 26 and he completely changed my life for the better. One of the powerful changes I experienced was my identity. Before Christ, I found my identity in my job and peer groups and when those things disappeared, my self-confidence and worth went out the door as well. I am proud to say that I am a child of the Most-High God. I sleep well at night, knowing my soul is secure and I have a peace that surpasses all understanding.

My family matters most because of the unconditional love and support they give me. I feel like God blessed me with the most amazing, supportive husband. Together, we had my two sons, who are easily my best friends in the world.
