Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Campbell.
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I spent over a decade in customer service and sales. Six years ago I decided that I needed something that I could do my way. I needed something in my brokenness and self-dissatisfaction that no one could judge it or scrutinize it. In looking for that thing, I returned to my roots in the cosmetics industry. I bought my first makeup products, I did my first look based on a YouTuber that I’d found. I loved the overwhelming and warm response to my new skill at the time. I got started and had no idea that I would be catapulted into my purpose as a businesswoman, that I would find the thing that gave me my voice (even though I would work with my hands). I did makeup part-time for 95% of that time. I was blessed to be fired from my job in 2022 and pushed to develop my skill and craft full-time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road definitely has not been smooth to say the least. Some things have to be fought for. I realized that overall things I work in an industry that helps develop identity. I was struggling with my own identity for a long time as a business owner and creative. Being a makeup artist is fun, however learning the type of artist that you want to be…that’s a different ball game. There are so many people the need more than the skills we have to offer. When I learned this, that’s when the real work began. I had to choose what I wanted to be more, the creative or the business owner? How much room was I willing to give myself to stop hiding behind my talent and release my gift. I had to figure out what fear was keeping me from connecting my strengths and skills to my talents and gifts. This made things difficult because I realized that I was not a makeup artist only, but inspiration, wisdom, direction, and in essence I was developing people along the journey by doing the things that came naturally to me. When that clarity became tangible for me, I was then able to begin seeing the results that I was missing because now I can function fully in the call of my beauty business while connecting my skills and strengths to it. This led to creative offers that reached more people in more industries.
As you know, we’re big fans of JessicaRacquel Llc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a makeup artist, I am known for my natural makeup as it is true to its form. My aesthetic is long-lasting with a skin-like finish, and radiant on any skin type and complexion.
The thing to know about the JessicaRacquel brand is that expansion is happening. As I continue to build my service portfolio, I am also starting to build into my business, how I will be able to help other service providers in the beauty industry. The thoughts of a creative and the thoughts of a business owner differ. This is an area that I am still developing, yet I never miss an opportunity to pour from my cup of wisdom. As their colleague my goal is to use what I’ve learned to help my peers increase their mindset, increase in their skills, increase their communication, and their ability to stand out in the beauty industry. We are handing out beauty and wisdom over here!
I am most proud of my ability to share this message. The industry can be intimidating with socialite service providers that appear as celebrities. More goes into being a beauty business than people think. I have worked this year to build a brand that has a solid foundation, a brand that inspires, and most of all that is multi-faceted. I refuse to be boxed in. I get to be unique and that’s the best part. I’m proud of the growth and development that has taken over me along this journey.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of the things I enjoyed most was sitting on the floor as my grandmother hot combed my hair and talked to me about cosmetology. I had the opportunity to witness cosmetologist and women that lived their lives being beautiful & adored for it on both my mother and father’s sides of my family.
I would relax and style my mother’s hair by the time I was 10/11 years old. I would learn to do nails and fall in love with lipstick. I had the joys of being a cosmetic girl as a kid and I looked forward to it daily. I would sew clothes for my dolls and style their hair creatively. I would refine them and empower them. As the only kid in my household, I was speaking into myself at the same time, little did I know it, but I was affirming who I was meant to be.
My grandmother would empower me to be both beauty and brains, to have the superpower of being a businesswoman! She led by example, and I am certain she would be exceedingly proud of who I’ve become. Not because she created desire in me, but because she showed me that the desire was already there, she nurtured the flame until I could handle it on my own. I get to be what I always wanted to be and for that, I am grateful.
