Community Highlights: Meet Dwayne Kelly of DK’s Handyman Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwayne Kelly.

Hi Dwayne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my handyman business on prayer and faith. I was fired from my job at a country club after 10 years. It was a day after my birthday, so I guess it was their birthday gift to me! But seriously, I sat down with my wife and we talked and prayed for guidance on what to do next. I could either go to work for someone else and start over or start my own business. We choose the latter! So, DK’s Handyman Services, LLC. was born. Thank God we did because it was one of the best decisions of our lives. Becoming an entrepreneur has given me so much freedom. Being a business owner can be challenging, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am thankful every day for that detour because it led me right to my destiny and the purpose that God had for me. I was pushed out of my comfort zone into something greater!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not always been easy. Some of the struggles I faced when starting my business was finding clients and figuring out what to charge in order to remain competitive. Another struggle that I often face is that my income varies from month to month. There are times that I’m booked months out and then there are times where things slow down quite a bit. Many entrepreneurs refer to these struggles as “Feast and Famine”. It is in the “famine” periods that lessons are learned. The slow periods teach how to save and manage your finances. Also, as an entrepreneur, you have to know your worth. Times are hard for everyone. You will run into clients that don’t want to pay you what you are worth or they want to renegotiate the prices that you quote them. It is very important to stay firm and not settle for less. Your experience, time, gift, and cost to run a business is worth every penny.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about DK’s Handyman Services LLC?
Some services I provide but not limited to are preventative maintenance, painting, electrical, plumbing, drywall repair, appliance installation and repair, furniture assembly, and carpentry.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people don’t know is that my wife came up with the idea that I started my handyman business.
