Community Highlights: Meet Samelia Johnson of Haus of Aromas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samelia Johnson.

Hi Samelia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for making candles started when I was about 18 years old, however back then it was more of a hobby and a hustle and wasn’t long-lived. More recently in 2020 when I became a stay-at-home mom I dived head-first into my passion and haven’t looked back. I have always loved a good candle and a clean home and so Haus of Aromas was born!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success has not been easy and I am constantly learning and evolving each and every day. I am a self-taught chandler and the process of candle making is a science so there was a lot of testing in the beginning that is very expensive and time-consuming. Funding is an obstacle many small businesses face and it mostly begins with us funding our businesses and dreams out of our own pockets. Along the way, I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to properly invest as well as obtain business credit in order to fund my business more effectively. Lastly, my greatest obstacle has been running my entire business myself. I am the sole owner and therefore I am the manufacturer, marketer, branding manager, bookkeeper and everything else you can think of that makes the business go! In the near future, I look forward to being able to delegate some of these tasks to others so I may focus more on my product development and long-term goals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Haus of Aromas?
My business is centered around the home which is very important to I would say most people. The home is where your heart is, your comfort, your safe space. Your home is where you kick your feet up, relax, and burn a nice candle! I hand-make all-natural soy candles and other products including room sprays, diffusers, and wax melts! All of my products are toxin free and made in small batches for quality control. My candles are known for their quality from the strong scent throw, the slow and clean burn as well as the aesthetic that allows them to fit into any space. I am most proud of being able to build my business from the ground up! I love that I am able to provide my customers with quality products that are all-natural and non-toxic. I feel it is very important to be able to enjoy your candles, sprays and melts without filling your home with unnecessary and unhealthy toxins in the process.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are playing with my friends, siblings and cousins. My favorite memory has to be “ice skating” outside with rollerblades after an ice storm! We put on our skates one day after an ice storm where the road in our neighborhood was completely frozen and pretended to be ice skating. It was risky yet fun and exciting all at once!
