Rising Stars: Meet Nikkia McClain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikkia McClain.

Hi Nikkia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After achieving success in the real estate market, I was ready to seize a new challenge: making my mark in marketing and public relations. However, I had no personal or professional experience. What did I have is an overwhelming drive to push forward and founded TENÉ NÍCOLE. Despite the daunting odds set ahead of me, I paved this path toward entrepreneurship with skillful expertise and unwavering dedication.

Since starting Tene Nicole in 2011, I have continued to raise the level of conversation and opportunities for clients and garnered key relationships to enhance their publicity via television, magazine, and radio. My efforts continue to maximize the exposure clients receive nationally and internationally.

My latest endeavor includes taking Tene Nicole to new heights with the recent launch of the Tene Nicole Creative Agency. In addition, I recently became a new author with her first how-to book, “DIYPR: Why Hire A Publicist When You Can Do It Yourself!” and my online program’s launch DIYPR Become The Source. My book and platform equip beginning publicists, entrepreneurs, and small business owners, with critical information, including how to: discover and develop a brand, identify a target media audience, create and nurture relationships, learn how and when to pitch themselves/their brand, and so much more.

Lastly, I’m pursuing a Ph.D. in Marketing from Walden University.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Despite tremendous obstacles, I remain a successful entrepreneur and small business owner. As an African-American woman in this society often plagued by the devaluation of black female expertise and labor, it has been an uphill battle to obtain recognition for my capabilities – let alone the pay that reflects them! In spite of all these difficulties though, I have persevered through every challenge with unwavering determination towards achieving greatness.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a powerhouse in my own right, having executed public relations and marketing initiatives at the highest capacity. I’m strategic, creative, savvy, generous, and extremely resourceful. Because of that, I have successfully produced top-notch campaigns and practical projects for clients. Many have been featured on The Wendy Williams Show, The Real, NBC, ABC, FOX, TMZ, BOLD TV, Sister Circle TV, The Steve Harvey Show; The Breakfast Club, Hot 97; and numerous print/digital outlets, including ESSENCE, OK!, Life and Style, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Forbes, to name a few.

I’m proud of the generational opportunities I’m creating not only for myself but those that work for and with me.

How do you define success?
As a business owner, mother, and wife, I understand that success means different things to different people. To me, success is not defined by achieving big goals or becoming successful overnight. Instead, it is more about the journey of trying and learning while growing as a person. The small day-to-day decisions and actions that I take in pursuit of a successful business, family life, and marriage. Achieving harmony among those roles, with the efforts to be present in both my professional and personal life.
