Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae D.
Jae D., we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started off singing as a young child in church. With my dad being a pastor, you can imagine I was always a part of the youth choirs and any events that included singing when growing up. My dad always spent time practicing with me and introducing me to music by artists such as Erykah Badu, Floetry, and many others, which I would always perform for my parents. As I got older, I continued to study different artists, their music, different genres of music, singing styles, and doing different things to expand my vocal range and knowledge. Around the age of 15, I became a part of a Performing Arts program in NY where I was able to enhance my performance skills, singing and dancing, performing for many different audiences throughout the state of New York.
I moved to Atlanta, GA at the age of 17, where I attended Spelman College. I became a music major, a part of the glee club, and always participated in pageants, contests, etc., where I showcased my singing. I always knew I wanted to be a professional and famous singer, but was just more so confused on the direction I wanted to go and how I wanted to get there. Upon graduating from Spelman College, I attended John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA and after completing my first year it hit me. I woke up one day and knew this wasn’t what I wanted to do. My passion was singing, and I wanted to chase my dreams instead of continuing on a path that I may have been doing for others. I started to tap into my artistry, began writing original music and continuing on the path of chasing my dreams. Since then, I have released music, videos, done performances, and most recently released my Debut Album entitled “Rideau Ferme”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think like anything there are always going to be obstacles, and nothing will really ever be a completely smooth road. Like many artists or entrepreneurs, I definitely went through the stage of doubt where I often wondered if people would accept me as an artist and my music. Whether or not I was making the right decision in going after what I believed in, and would it actually all be worth it in the long run. Once I got out of my head and put those insecurities to the side, I was able to truly tap into my artistry. I would definitely say my parents and family have always been my biggest supporters and always spoke positivity and life into me pushing me to do more and do better to this day, which played a big part in my career thus far. I think that no matter what it’s important to always believe in yourself because if you don’t, who will?
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Atlanta-based R&B singer & songwriter. Although I am very versatile, I definitely would say I specialize in R&B/Soul music. One of the things I can say I’m most proud of thus far is my writing ability. All of my released music is original music all written by me. I am excited for the possibility to collaborate with different writers and artists in the future, but I am very proud of this. I think what sets me apart is my sound. I have my own unique sound and singing style, which I think is very important in artistry, especially today.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The music industry has changed so much over the years and is continuously evolving so who knows what it will look like in the next 5-10 years, I just hope to be a major part of it, and I know that I will. I would love to get back to the true R&B/Soul music that we saw for so many years, which I think many artists have tapped back into recently, but I think we have so much more that can be done.
