Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin John.
Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began singing from a young age. As soon as I could talk, I was performing. Since then, I never stopped. I grew up in Levittown, PA which is right outside Philadelphia. I would sing anywhere and everywhere I had the opportunity. At 18, I went and studied Musical Theatre at Temple University where I received my degree. I worked as a musical theatre actor for about ten years, performing all around the world and all around the country until Covid hit in 2020. When the world shut down, I was performing in New Zealand with my partner. When we had made it back to the States, I evaluated what I wanted from this life and I began writing my own original music. My love and passion for songwriting grew so much that I decided to build a career behind it. We moved from New York City to Nashville Tennessee and I began performing my music live.
I’ve released 5 singles and an EP titled “Changes” that I’m so incredibly proud of. I auditioned for season 21 of American Idol where I sang my rendition of “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley for the judges and received 3 yes’s to Hollywood. Lionel Richie said, “I’ve heard that song a million times and I will never hear it again without thinking about this performance.” I proceeded a couple of rounds into Hollywood before I got sick and was sent home. Since returning from that experience, I now have a residency at The Electric Jane in Nashville where I play with my band Kevin John and The Power Gayngers. I also recorded a version of “Suspicious Minds” with Grammy-winning producer Paul Wright III which will be coming in early June so stay tuned for that!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, there have been so many bumps along the way. A lot of struggles. Many closed doors. But my motto is that every closed door points you to the right one. Every no is sending you in the direction of the correct yes. Life is hard, rejection is hard, but when you find the thing you’re passionate about, it makes everything that much easier
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m known for my voice and my live shows. My music is streamed worldwide and it is truly my proudest accomplishment. What sets me apart is my love for life and others. I believe we are all a bunch of weirdos pretending to be normal, I don’t pretend 🙂
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was putting on shows with my sisters and my cousins. Every Christmas we’d make our parents sit down and watch a full show that included me singing all my fav Christmas songs. Now I still do the same thing, lol. Every Christmas I throw a show in PA that all my family comes out to.
