Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Gunawan.
Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia and I moved to Atlanta about a year ago in the pursuit of making film and theatre my career. My love of filmmaking comes from my younger days of acting in my school drama club. I realize that I have a love for storytelling, expressing myself through characters and stories. Filmmaking has always been an interest but when a class project in middle school required us to make a short film, I knew I wanted to make more.
Throughout the years of high school, I got to explore more of my craft. My friends and I got to collaborate in developing and staging an original musical for our school production. In addition, we also got to make short films for competitions which made me learn more about filmmaking and boost my love for it. Happy to say that the friends I got to collaborate with back then have become my long-time collaborators.
And now, here I am learning and pursuing a career in the film industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Where I’m from, filmmaking has always been seen as something more of a man’s work. Times have certainly progressed, but back then as an Asian woman, I could feel the worry from people around me when I said I wanted to study film. Being compared to my fellow filmmaker of the opposite gender was a regularity and I was often advised to pursue something else besides film. Even though in regards to that it hasn’t been smooth, I am grateful that I’ve always had support from both my parents and my closest friends.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a filmmaker. I produce, direct, or act on projects I’ve done so far which I aspire to continue. Combining my love of theatre and film, I usually immersed myself in whimsical theatrical aesthetics. I also love my stories to focus on exploring the human condition. I aspire to create moving narratives that resonate with diverse audiences on a profound level.

Without the support of both of my parents, my closest family members, and my best friends. I would certainly not be here. They not only supported my education but also trusted me and believed in me.
