Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Antoine.
Hi Terrence, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was eight when I gave my sister Barbie a 27-piece before I knew it. I was ten when I witnessed what weave could do when my mom lost her hair from being sick. From there, I have always been fascinated by hair and the colors, cuts, updos, pin-ups, roller set, perms, etc, Hair became a way that I expressed myself in other ways than my paintings. It allows me now to create works of art that are simply from out of my mind. I got to this point when I met my mentor Tikia Weems, the shop owner of A Timeless Touch Hair Salon. She took me under her wing and began to show me the ropes and teach me the correct ways of doing things. Also, side the other stylist in the shop, I learned and listened to them and I found my way and technique that now has landed me working right alongside them.
Yet, the funny thing is that my friends around me before I knew it was all stylists, and what made me really give it a full chance was all of their love and support that said it was time to show the world my gifts and stop hiding. I stepped out on faith and I’ve been repairing and growing hair left and right now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It wasn’t always a smooth ride because I was so hard on myself that I would fail; it took my godfather RaShae to tell me Terrence, you had beat the odds several times and this time was no different. Stop worrying about falling and believe in yourself that you will be wonderful and succeed in this just like you do everything else. Thanks, RaShae.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main focus is Locs and natural hair that repairs that damaged hair making room for healthy hair to grow. I mainly use Aunt Jackie products, which are perfect for all kinds of hair. I am most proud of the connections I built with my clientele, making them feel like they are talking to one of their good friends.
What sets me apart is that each person is that I study their hair texture and build a customized plan for their hair to get it back to being healthy or just lengths for others.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When finding your mentor, get someone that isn’t afraid to give you criticism and give you feedback. Being open-minded and helping those out in need.
