Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena K Lewis
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I began my journey as a creative actually over ten years ago. I began as a self-taught & later certified graphic designer in the age of the internet’s “big rise”, expanding overtime on my artistic vision & from there I continued to venture into other creative endeavors.
My creative outlets include graphics but not limited to that. I am also a third-generation hair stylist with a true passion and desire to grow healthy African-American hair. I also have an online presence featuring truly good food. I definitely am a foodie.
Combining both passions has helped me thrive over the years and to stay up to date on current trends. It has been interesting and life-changing as a young woman. Watching and being a part of the rise in social media and beauty in its online & offline presence, and to see what it is today is truly mind-boggling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not necessarily been a smooth road. On both ends of creation, I’ve faced challenges. In the beginning, natural hair wasn’t as accepted as it is today. In just a few years the attitudes towards hair has adjusted, but you’d be surprised at how many clients were reluctant to try a natural hairstyle or a silk press in the beginning.
As well as in graphic designing, there was a time the Internet space was looked upon as “wasting your time on the computer”, funny enough. And there are always gender-related issues, IT (Information Technology as well as Graphic Design) is a male-dominated field, and although women find room, it’s often difficult, especially as a woman of color. I’ve had to venture out in ways but also, seek others who related to me in projects.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time online content creator/ digital creator. I also engage in the beauty space for women in my age group. Providing classy content that hopefully brings back the regality of reading an issue of “Essence”. My mission is to bring forth content that is centered towards everyday women who love a touch of fabulousness.
I am most proud of the creative work I have done with marketing firms in the Atlanta area, as well as creative pieces done in contribution to the beauty space. Finally, I am most proud of partnering with beauty brands and helping to expand and change the views on hair care.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by setting out goals & being determined to accomplish your goal(s), while simultaneously finding joy in your life.
