Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Parra.
Hi Maria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a passionate interior decorator. My story began when I was little, and I painted and modified my dolls’ houses; that’s when I discovered my love for design and aesthetics. Since I was young, I always enjoyed transforming spaces and creating welcoming environments.
After graduating in a totally different area, such as public accounting, I started studying interior design. I started with my own spaces and helping a friend who is a civil engineer. I had the opportunity to learn and perfect my skills. Then I moved to Atlanta in 2019 and in 2020, during the pandemic, I started. Offering online interior decoration services, Over time, my creativity and dedication caught the attention of satisfied clients, allowing me to establish my own design company in 2021.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects, from private residences to commercial spaces. Each project is unique and challenges my creativity in exciting ways.
My designs focus on functionality, aesthetics, and customer satisfaction. I am always excited by the opportunity to help people turn their homes into spaces that reflect their style and personality.
My journey as an emigrant has been one of constant learning and growth, and I am eager to continue exploring new trends and techniques in the exciting world of interior design.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an interior decorator and immigrant, I can tell you that my path in the world of design has not been completely smooth. As in any creative career, I faced significant challenges that contributed to my professional development.
One of the biggest challenges was establishing my own company. Starting a business in the competitive field of interior design required not only creative skills but also a solid understanding of business management. Learning to balance creativity with business demands on top of my life as a mom was a gradual but valuable process.
Definitely, one of my greatest stories of resilience comes with migrating to a new country, new traditions, a new language, and even new weather! Adapting to a new environment, learning to sell myself, showing my work and demonstrating my talent in a new land, being a mother, and wanting to achieve my dreams has been a challenge, but it has been full of many learnings.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle overcome has contributed to my personal and professional growth. Passion for design and determination to overcome adversity have allowed me to move forward and find satisfaction in each completed project.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in creating spaces that go beyond visual aesthetics, seeking to merge functionality and comfort with design uniquely. My approach focuses on understanding the needs and personalities of my clients to reflect them in the environment I design. I do not limit myself to a specific style, as I believe that each project deserves a unique and personalized approach.
I specialize in residential design although My portfolio ranges from elegant residences to vibrant commercial spaces. I am known for my ability to transform even the most challenging (or ugly) places into functional and aesthetically pleasing environments.
What makes me most proud is seeing my clients’ satisfaction when experiencing their new spaces. My main goal is to exceed your expectations and create environments that are not only beautiful but also comfortable and practical. My dedication to excellence in interior design is what has contributed to my reputation in the industry, and is what drives me to continue exploring and growing my practice.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As an interior decorator, I consider risk-taking to be essential in my creative field. Innovative design often involves stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. The willingness to take risks can lead to surprising discoveries and creative solutions that might not emerge from conventional approaches.
I have taken significant risks in my career, especially by embarking on projects that challenged stylistic norms or by incorporating unexpected elements into designs. For example, I once proposed the inclusion of a bold artistic mural in an office space, challenging the traditional idea of a corporate work environment. Although this approach was risky, the end result not only satisfied the client but also became a unique focal point that captured the attention of those visiting the location.
A constant risk that he takes is to suggest that contractors knock down walls, as many as necessary, to achieve open and more modern spaces.
In my perspective, risk-taking also involves learning from mistakes. Not all experiments may turn out as expected, but each experience provides valuable lessons that enrich my approach and allow me to evolve as an interior design professional. Ultimately, I believe that well-managed risk is essential to maintaining creativity and relevance in a field as dynamic as interior design.
