Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylyn Ross.
Hi Kaylyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started when I was around the age of 13. I was bullied pretty badly growing up, and because of that, it caused me to question my beauty. I felt that as long as I could continue changing my hairstyles, somehow, I’d feel prettier. At that age, my mom started allowing me to “play” in my hair partially because she didn’t always want to do it. That honestly sparked my love for doing hair. I went on to continue doing my hair all through high school but got too discouraged to go to cosmetology school following high school. So, I spent years teaching myself. Whether it was watching another stylist, watching videos, or trying styles on my own. Thank God for my friends and family, who let me play in their hair before I knew what I was doing, haha! Well, fast forward to 2020, I decided to do hair full time, and I even added being a last tech under my belt. I was my happiest doing hair and working for myself. I loved seeing the confidence my clients would build up sitting in my chair.
It meant so much more for me because I could help someone feel better than I did at one point. I did that for a year, but in 2021, my husband and I decided to make a huge move over an hour away, and we all know that means you lose clientele. So, I had to step away from doing hair full time and go back to working a 9-5; I spent two years working a 9-5, having a baby, and continuing doing hair. Which meant constantly working. No breaks, no days off. This caused me to be tired, unhappy, and have an insane amount of mommy and wife guilt because my family ALWAYS comes first. But I knew what God promised me, and that was my business. On October 5th, 2023 my business had a complete shift. I decided to make a faith post to see what would happen. Me thinking I may gain five clients from this post (that was too little thinking) I had over 300 inquiries that caused me to make a faith move. I talked things over with my husband, and we both believed it was time. It was time for ConfessUrBeauty to be open full-time. Here I am four months in, and business has not slowed down yet! And I know it won’t!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, anything good will have its obstacles or challenges. But I serve a God who always shows up and always does exceedingly and abundantly above all I could ever ask or think. Something I’ve struggled with is staying firm on my rules. I have to learn that of I set them that’s that. I just call those challenges growing pains.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught hairstylist who specializes in braid styles, crochet and locs. I am most known for my customer service. A lot of my clients will say that that is one thing that sets me apart. I believe that when you’re getting your hair done is also an experience, and you should create a relationship with your stylist. My clients know I will check on them and pray from them when they are not in my seat. I am most proud of my growth and how I am remaining the same with the increase of clients.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was winning my high school talent show in the 10th grade. As a kid that was bullied, that was one of the first moments I felt “seen”. That forever left a mark on me!
