Meet Erica Bogart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Bogart.

Erica Bogart

Hi Erica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the world of professional makeup started at the age of 19, during my college years. I was a product specialist at the MAC cosmetics counter in Bloomingdale’s Lenox. Fueled by an insatiable passion for all things makeup, I was like a little makeup sponge, soaking it all up with my constant desire to absorb new product knowledge. While at MAC, I had the privilege of working alongside trainers and educators during major events. After 4.5 years my career took a turn as I transitioned to freelancing with renowned brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Laura Mercier in the luxury retail industry. This shift marked the beginning of a journey that extended beyond my college job, evolving into a fulfilling career as a professional independent makeup artist. I was able to work retail and pursue photoshoots in my spare time to grow my brand and business.

My path led me to diverse opportunities, including collaborations on photoshoots and passion projects that fueled my aspiration to become a successful makeup artist. This unexpected career opened doors to opportunities with prominent ATL-based companies such as Delta, Home Depot, Turner Broadcasting, and UPS.

As I perfected my craft, my focus shifted towards soft glam makeup. Catering to all skin tones and expanding into the bridal market. This new direction not only allowed me to travel globally but also proved to be a deeply rewarding career.

In addition, I took on the role as one of the founding educators of Studio Crush School of Makeup in 2013. There, I mentor emerging artists in the industry, providing them with valuable insights and opportunities to work alongside me within my growing agency. My journey from a college job at a cosmetics counter to a globally recognized makeup artist and educator has been an enriching and fulfilling process.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the freelance path has indeed presented its share of challenges. Building a business from scratch in the realm of makeup artistry can be inherently daunting. Especially where everyone thinks they are a professional MUA from watching YouTube and TikTok. One significant struggle I encountered was the uncertainty that comes with freelancing—having to independently construct and sustain a business. This encompassed the intricacies of financial management, doing your taxes, and planning for the future since you are not working for another company that provides these benefits. A task that required planning to ensure stability and growth over the years.

Juggling multiple clients simultaneously became another hurdle. I am an on-location makeup artist, and I travel all over the city/state and the South East, domestically and even internationally. Balancing the needs and expectations of each client while maintaining a high standard of work demanded exceptional organizational skills and time management. It was a constant challenge to allocate sufficient attention to each project without compromising on quality and making sure I still showed up online to my clients. Outsourcing additional help for my administrative tasks has helped me grow my business and given me peace of mind.

Additionally, finding my niche and ideal client. What kind of makeup did I enjoy the most? What made sense for my business where I was located? Identifying the specific market that resonated most with my style and expertise required a deep understanding of my own strengths and a keen awareness of the evolving trends in the makeup industry.

In essence, the journey as a freelance makeup artist demanded resilience, adaptability, and a continuous commitment to refining both business and artistic skills. Despite the challenges, each obstacle became a stepping stone, contributing to the growth and success of my independent career.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is to create beauty that transcends skin tones and celebrates individuality. Specializing in the art of soft glam, I have created a niche in curating luxurious bridal experiences that are local and global. I often travel internationally to serve my clients as well for their special events. What sets me apart is my commitment to inclusivity. I take pride in specializing in all skin tones, ensuring that every unique complexion is celebrated and enhanced. My focus on luxury bridal makeup is not just about creating a look; it’s about crafting an experience that reflects a refined version of your everyday self with sophistication tailored to the individual desires of each bride.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the opportunity to connect with extraordinary women from diverse ages and backgrounds. I enjoy being a part of their journey to confidence through makeup artistry. A particularly touching facet of my experience is working with women who have triumphed over challenges such as chemo/cancer. Witnessing their transformation as they regain their hair, brows, or lashes as we apply them is amazing. The ability to instill confidence and help these remarkable women rediscover their beauty is, to me, a superpower.

I am recognized not just for my makeup skills but also for my infectious energy and big smile. Clients often appreciate the positive and upbeat energy I bring to our sessions, making the process of looking and feeling their best a fun experience. My work is a fusion of skill, passion, and a genuine desire to empower individuals through the transformative art of makeup, creating not just beautiful looks but unforgettable moments of self-discovery and confidence.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a surprising contrast to my current talkative and outgoing demeanor – I was actually quite shy and quiet. Many people find it hard to believe, considering my present vibrant personality. In my earlier years, I found expression through my love for drawing, painting, and anyway I could create! In a way, my journey as a makeup artist is an extension of the artistic foundation I laid in my childhood. The skills I honed while drawing and painting have seamlessly transformed into the artistry of makeup application. What started as a childhood love for creating has evolved into a fulfilling career that allows me to bring out the beauty in others.
