Exploring Life & Business with Ellen Dawe of Farmhouse Poundcakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellen Dawe.

Ellen Dawe

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started FarmHouse PoundCakes in the spring of 2014; after my husband had passed and I wanted an income that was home-based so when the kids got home from school, it wasn’t to an empty house. This was at my small farm in Dacula, hence the name! The Washington’s at Washington Strawberry Farm gave me my first vending opportunity and from there, it was small farmers markets to much larger farmers markets and festivals.

I never wanted to sell just a PoundCake, I wanted to sell THE BEST POUNDCAKE and I loved that PoundCake is a memory for so many people here in the South. In 2018, I purchased an 1832 FarmHouse outside Cornelia and opened it there, it was a success and I sold it in the spring of 2023 and now have a brick-and-mortar in downtown Cornelia that is a dream come true! Looking forward to 2024, we hope to open a second location.

Some of my baked goods are inspired by my travels to Scotland and England where I have visited various bakeries and have met some wonderful bakers including The Hebridean Baker himself!

I’ve “learned in the field” as Julia Child would say but have also worked with some great Chefs including celebrity Chef Gale Gand! I love this area, the community, and the vision that the Reeders and others have for Cornelia and I’m so excited to see where this journey takes me!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Farmhouse Poundcakes?
We are a small batch bakery and cafe located in Downtown Cornelia, Georgia; nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains!

We are known for our award-winning southern pound cakes, but also make incredible granola, amazing cookies, Coach House Sticky Toffee Shortbread, cinnamon rolls, and scones with our house-made clotted cream & jam! We also serve lunch including creative sandwiches and soups made with locally sourced ingredients.
